The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Any chance of this site getting the Shoutbox feature, rather than the horribly slow and reliable current chatroom?

Do the shoutbox, shake your shoutbox. Do the shoutbox, shake your shoutbox.

I have been wondering the same thing. It might also mean that some of the "conversation" type threads which have been annoying the Thread Police (nice people) could migrate there? Not that I would ever be guilty of participating in such wrongful posting practices. I kind of think though that there are probably reasons why there isn't one, because they're pretty easy to put up on this type of forum, so Chris will have considered and discarded the idea already, I'm sure.

Ok - Balls for Brains and Dickie need to write a parody. Get it out of your systems. It'll be good.

I had a feeling I was in a minority thinking that it was brilliant........I'll just sit in this corner and be quiet.

I'm not really into the idea of a shoutbox. We have a chatroom that, under normal circumstances, works very well.

There's hardly ever anyone in there though., a shoutbox would probably be more popular.

At least a shoutbox would get used regularly - and why can't you have both (in theory)? But hey, its your site, its you that makes it what it is, isn't it?

I must say that I've never really seen the point of a shout box on a forum, especially when there's a chatroom, as well as private messaging, and, of course, external IM services and email.

I just see ShoutBoxen as another thing to install, maintain, vet for bugs and waste bandwidth on. I'm not sure what you gain from having one.

Well, in my experience on other forums (which also have chatrooms which never get used and PMs) - you gain a lot of entertainment. But like I said, its Chris's site. If I sounded a bit sarcastic in my last post its because I didn't like his dismissive tone, but it's still his site!

I have to say that it does appear popular on IM and it would save a number of threads being locked for people chatting. You cant have a group chat using IM and some people don't want to give away their messenger details.

Err, since when have you not been able to have group chat's on IM, I have them all the time. Also, if you're not willing to get out 'messenger' details then you can't really want to talk to someone that much.

A lot of us - well, me - are on this site mostly during the day, while we are (supposed to be) at work - don't know about you, but my employer doesn't seem to want us to have MSN or AIM on these machines. Can't imagine why - and the point about a shoutbox is that whoever is on the forum at that time can have a proper chat in real time. And bearing in mind we keep getting told off for doing this in threads, I think it would be a good idea. Pms don't serve this purpose - and "take it to MSN" is just presumptive, like I said, many of us are on this site at times when we wouldn't have access to our MSN accounts anyway.

The reason we are not even going to try a shoutbox is because Chris doesn't want to. And its his site, he can do - or not do - what he likes with it.

I meant's group chat using PM's on here...and as for giving out my details...I'm just weird like that, I only give out my e-mail and stuff to people I know. Everyone's got their own little quirks and that's mine.
