The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

I understand Chris is signing in Basingstoke on the 20th of October which I will be gladly attending.

My question is, I have never been to a book signing before and I know this may sound really dumb, but will they only sign books that they have in that store which you then pay for after he's signed it, or can you bring a copy of the book bought elsewhere and have that signed?

I want to buy the book this weekend, read it, then take it to be signed, but obviously don't want to buy it if I'm going to have to buy another copy on the store he's signing at.

Thanks in Advance

I think alot of shops will have a policy where you can only get your book signed if you've bought in the shop.

There has been other mentions of this on the board.

Somewhere else on the forum this has been answered - I understand that in general, you need to buy the book there, then queue up having retained the receipt, to get it signed. But it might be worth giving the particular bookshop in question a call to confirm.

Thank you for your advance of thanks. Please accept mine retrospectively.

Just called the store and they will only be signing copies bought in that store, however they said if you buy the book in the store before the signing and bring the proof of purchase they will be happy to let me get that one signed.

They said they had a fresh delivery a day or two ago and have loads of copies in at the moment, so will be popping down tomorrow to buy that ahead of the date.

Cheers for the advise Yudster - Glad I didn't order it from Amazon before now then!!

No problem Boyband - I won't be getting to a signing, so do me a favour - when you meet him, tell him Yudster from chrismoyles.net sends her love. And tell me what he says!

Ask him if his book sigining tour is just another one of his publicity stunts.

But make sure he knows that Balls for Brains said that - and that he sends his love.

I've been thinking about this and imagine if you rang up and asked if they would like you to buy the book at their shop or a rivals? Of course they're gonna say you have to get it at their shop (or a branch of their chain or whatever). As far as I know they can't turn you away, I've been to many book signings living in london you have to try hard to go to a bookshop where someone *isn't* signing a book that day.

Obviously the company want you to buy the book from them but ask any senior management person and they'll tell you it's great for publicity and if people come in to get a book signed then they may also purchase another book from them.

What's to stop you turning up saying you bought the book from their shop 2 days ago but can't find your receipt, are they really gonna turn away a potential customer, and if Moyles found out they'd been turning away his fans he may be a bit angry about that as well.

I don't think they have a leg to stand on, especially if their shop is charging £16.99 for it and down the road you can get it for half price. Any git gives me any trouble and i'll tell 'em I'm thinking of purchasing the entire Stephen King back catalogue for a xmas present.

I raised the Q before and aksed watrerstones about it..basically you have to buy the book from the store. If youve bought the book already, do this: go waterstones, buy the book, get it signed, have a nice time, and then keep the waterstones receipt and use it to get a refund for the book youve bought elsewhere (eg from the net eg play.com). simple

Scub that, I like the sound of taking the book I've already bought and read to WH after I've bought a seperate book to be signed.

I have been told that signed copies should be available from waterstones & ottakars after the events, and they should be distributed throughout their network of stores......

But, not all stores may have them because they may sell out!
