Interesting double page in the middle of todays Independent.

I a) dont have a scanner, or b) if I did don't think it would be big enough to scan the page in

Chris Moyles, The Independent wrote:INSIDE STORY

Radio 1's Chris Moyles is a giant of the breakfast airwaves, his show attracting 7m listeners week. And he does it all from this studio. The man himself offers a guide

MICROPHONES

There are four of them and they are all Neumann mics, beautiful, fabulous and clear. Everybody else's is on an arm but mine is suspended from the ceiling by a fantastic array of pulleys and weights, which means that if I'm moving around you shouldn't hear it creak. That's the theory, anyway.

TEXT, E-MAILS SCREEN

This one is where the texts and e-mails appear - it's great because I can see exactly what people think about what we are talking about or the track we are playing. Generally people are pretty grumpy first thing, but they get better k as the show goes on.

ALED HAYDN-JONES

The daytime producer - he prepares material for the next day's show. He used to be the broadcast assistant on the show before he got promoted. He first got introduced to the listeners as 'BB Aled' when he did our reports on Big Brother when we were on in the afternoon.

MUSIC SCREEN

Everything is on hard disk. None of the playlist is on CD at all. The screen shows you the song that's coming up next and the song that we've just played, as well as what's currently playing. A great thing is that it says what time it will be when the record ends, which is perfect, even though I don't really use it because my back-timing is dreadful.

COMEDY DAVE

My assistant. Dave doesn't stand during the show, he sits down because he's too lazy. He will write anything that's not ad-libbed, any spoof ad or any quiz question. He does his tedious link and will write whatever. Then he sits behind that microphone and chips in for the whole show. We got together in late 1997 when I first joined Radio 1. His real name is Dave Vitty.

STUDIO

This is Studio Two at Radio l's headquarters on London's Great Portland Street. They've been doing the studios up for the past two years, for the first time since the Sixties. We started off in Three then moved to Four, and now we're in Two, which is the biggest of all of them and will be our home for the rest of our time.

MINIDISC& CD PLAYERS

I use these when I want to play music that isn't loaded into the system. Also, if I have recorded something at home from the TV or the computer to bring into the show, it'll be on a CD or MiniDisc and I'll play it out through these machines.

PRESENTER

I've always stood up since I started in radio. It gives me more energy and I can reach around and grab stuff when I want to. Standingup supposedly makes your diaphragm clearer, although I'm pretty sure that's bollocks.

JINGLE SCREEN

We call this a Cartwall Playout. It's for the jingles, the little pieces of music and the sound effects.

Each DJ gets their own set of pages. I have about six pages. There's 50 jingles on this screen - that's how much audio we have. Me and my day-time producer Aled Haydn-Jones are pretty much the only ones that know what's in there, otherwise it can be like somebody rearranging your sock drawer.

So, I know that in 'Chris 1', our first page, we have the news jingle, anything for today's show, any regular show features, and out-of-news jingles. 'Chris 2' is Celebrity Tarzan, sound effects, game shows, and music theme tunes. 'Chris 3' has voiceovers. Let's say we do a brand new feature tomorrow morning about XFactor - there will be an 'X Factor' page somewhere in there, and it will have the backing music and clips from the show.

NOTES

I have three sheets. One: running order. Two: musical running order. Three: somewhere for me to scribble on and to make notes.

THE BLUE BOX

This controls the two right-hand music screens. You get your schedule of music that you will play for the morning and you will scroll down and load them into three slots. It's like having three CD players really. So you might want to load the first song as you come out of the news. Say Robbie Williams, put that in number one. Then a little trail for the Scott Mills Show in number two. Then your next song in number three and you are all wrapped up and ready to go. I will do all of that during the news. The little spinning wheel means you can preview the song and sort your timings out.

BOOK

What's this? A copy of my autobiography, The Gospel According to ChrisMoyles, which happens to be out on Thursday. It's not like I've climbed Mount Everest or delivered babies for wild women in the Amazon, so it's a career autobiography, basically the story of me getting on the radio and making it to Radio 1.

THE DESK BUTTONS

These three little buttons move the desk up and down. They are marked 1, 2, 3. It goes up ridiculously high to what we call Vernon Kay or even Westwood level. Then it goes down quite low for people who sit down. That's so handy.

MIXING DESK

We have these to the left and right. There are faders to bring in the music and there are effects channels, including things like echo. There are other faders for telephone calls, News-beat, the pips. There might be 12 faders in use all at the same time.

PHONES

The phone-in number and the two private numbers into the studio, internal and external.

RACHEL JONES

The on-air producer. She pretty much stands there when she isn't rushing around in and out of the live lounge or making sure the guests are all right. Or she's grabbing stuff that I've shouted out that I need. Otherwise she plonks herself there. She will come in around 5am and stay in the office until about lpm.

MUSIC-SEARCH SCREEN

This is basically Radio l's record library. If there's music you want and can't find, you go to this screen and search for it, then load it from one screen to another, putting it into the schedule. Say you're talking about some guy on XFactor who sang Duran Duran's "Rio". Then we can whack that screen on, type in "Duran Duran" and "Rio", and see if it's in the system. If it is then we drag it onto the other music screen and it will appear on the schedule. That's if i it's there. If it's not there, we just carry on with some waffle.

You might learn a tiny bit about that sort of stuff at the beginning of the show, which I like to think of as the 'Anorak's Half Hour', if there's any technical worries at the beginning it usually makes good radio to talk about it, for example the head phones (they're called the cans in radioland you know! Whooo!) Then Dom usually will follow on the conversation with something like, "yeah my headphones feel different today too" and then with Chris quickly bringing us all back to reality with something like "You know we're actually on the air at the moment.." or "We're the only thing on Radio wun right now!" Good old waffle, its the random unplanned stuff thats the best as I'm sure Moyles himself agrees.
