Dave and Chappers were back for week 3 of their summer sports show today, both very confident of a big Bank Holiday weekend down the boozer watching all three play off finals. This was because they both earned maximum brownie points with their respective wives last night, by staying in to watch the last ever episode of Friends (which I thought was great, ignore the critics) and the first ever episode of Big Brother 5, which was like some kind of freak show. I’ll chat more about BB on Tuesday though so I won’t bore you with that here. Chappers even had a glass of white wine with the missus last night, while Dave bought himself some cans and Emma some red wine and Doritos. He said he tickled her feet while they watched TV. Dave said he didn’t get any dip with the Doritos though cos he and the wife prefer them on their own. Chappers said they were such traditionalists.
Chappers - I got extra brownie points this morning as well
Dave - Is it legal?
(Chappers and Producer Neil laugh)
Chappers (laughing) - Yes...GOD IT’S ALWAYS LEGAL!!!
Dave (laughs) - Yes sorry, legal is probably not the right word to use. What I meant to say was broadcastable
It turned out Chappers had just watched last night’s Hells Kitchen with the wife today, after they Sky Plussed it last night. A text came in from Jessica, who said she was off to the Brighton - Bristol City Div 2 play off final with her hubby tomorrow.
Chappers - Y’see, that’s the sort of wife we need
Dave - What do you mean “that’s the sort of wife we need”...we don’t share one, we need one each
(Producer Neil laughs)
Paul in Middlesbrough was trying to earn brownie points with the missus too, and wanted some suggestions on what sexy underwear to get her. Dave said knickers or a bra was always a good idea. Callers Steve and Scott were put on the air, both trying to earn brownie points with their wives so they can watch the Div 1 play off final down the pub later. Steve had gone down to Sainsbury’s this morning and got all the ingredients for tonight’s meal, was now stood in the kitchen doing the ironing and was supposed to be mowing the lawn later as well. The words “thumb”, “the” and “under” spring to mind. Mind you she wasn’t happy that he had cost them 75 quid last night by getting wheelclamped, so he was trying to make it up to her. Scott on the other hand was busy wallpapering the spare room while his wife was out shopping. Dave told him it could wait though and told him to finish it off later after hge'd watched the match.
THE SPANNERS VS THE EAGLES AND NO NEIL MORRISSEY:
As per usual, Dave and Mark dropped in to chat to Vernon on his show just after 12:45 this afternoon. Last week Dave failed abysmally when trying to successfully complete Vernon’s “Head Jam”, which is an idea taken from the new game show he’ll be presenting for BBC2 and 3. Basically it’s a set of 8 questions and you need to give all the 8 correct answers in order to win...but only after all the questions have been asked. Dave was using a memory technique today to try and help him out. It worked well as Dave read out all 8 answers in the correct order, but only 5 were actually right cos he ballsed up the first three completely. He said Noel was the lead singer of Oasis, Harry was one of the Queen’s sons and West Ham’s nickname was...the Spanners. He tried to make his excuses, saying that he was visualising the route from his to Moyles’s house in his mind, and that the hammers/spanners had been in a box on the car bonnet. Chappers wasn’t having any of it. Neither was Vernon, so Dave said he’d try again and definitely succeed next weekend.
Dave - I thought you were harsh there
Vernon - Not at all (plays Roses by Outkast)
This afternoon then it’s The Spanners vs The Eagles at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium for a place in the Premiership. In other words, it’s West Ham against Crystal Palace. With producer Neil a spanners fan, the balance was supposed to be redressed by Neil Morrissey, a big Palace fan and this weeks big star interview on the show. The interview was all arranged beforehand (it wasn’t some kind of speculative stalking exercise) and Dave and Chappers headed off to meet him in North London earlier this week. They rang him in the cab on the way there, but only reached his voicemail. He didn’t show up. There was no time to organise a replacement either so Dave checked the t’interweb for other famous Palace fans, in the hope that some would be listening to the show today and would ring in. Unfortunately Dave had to “close the curtains” on the whole idea as none of the following rang into the show: Jo Brand, Harry Carpenter, Ronnie Corbett, Roger De Courcey, Roy Hudd, Bill Wyman and David “The Kid” Jensen. Dave said there was probably something wrong with the phone lines.
RECORD OF THE WEEK:>>>>
This week it was for the longest female beard, grown between 1990 and 2002 by Vivian Wheeler of Wood River, Illinois USA. It reached 27.9cm in the end (11 and a half inches). This weeks 3 And In was won by Cassandra, a teacher from Lancing in West Sussex. She won a big Vodafone hospitality bus to go to Epsom this Friday, along with Chappers, Dave and 20 of the teachers from her workplace. They’ll be on half term so it’ll be alright. Next week the prize on 3 And In is the chance to go car racing at Rockingham and see 50 Cent perform live. Register by e-mailing mailto:chappersanddave@bbc.co.uk. Take That and Never Forget was the rather surprising choice for today’s Sporting Number One, picked by Dan from August 1995. He was living in Magaluf at the time and remembered popping into the bar to see Jonathan Edwards become the first man ever to jump 60 ft, then break his own record by 18 cm within 20 minutes. In a way it was the long jump moment Dave had been asking for on Show 1. Next week Vitty is after great pole vault, skeet shooting, scrambling (motor racing not eggs), darts and sailing moments...erm, good luck Dave. You can submit your suggestions online via Dave and Chappers pages @ Radio 1 ONLINE by just filling out the form at the bottom. Next week will be the last studio show before Chappers and Dave move over to Portugal to come live from Euro 2004.
