The brilliant Sweet Child Of Moped by Moped kicked off today’s show. Rachel was back producing after being on a course yesterday. She said she learned a lot on her course but when asked by Chris to illustrate on the air she said she’d tell him later. Chris said he was tired and moaned about the fact he had to cough up £205 to his gardener this morning. Chris explained how his gardener bought him ‘beautiful plant pots containing beautiful plants’ but said they were now just ‘beautiful plant pots containing dead plants’. Chris said he never watered them and that’s the reason why he doesn’t have a pet - because he’d just simply forget to feed them. Aled asked why ‘we’re having a link about plants’. Chris said it was the word of the day as Jo Whiley had also had some gardener-type guy on her show earlier.
Dave said Jo Whiley was ‘Radio 1’s version of Charlie Dimmock’. Chris said he thought that was a huge insult to Jo as she actually looks feminine. Dave said ‘not in the looks department. I mean because of her horticultural knowledge’. Classic Comedy Dave. The show was sent some free promotional crispy cream donuts from Harrods. Chris told the story of how at the Reading Festival a few years ago he was on first name terms with the donut man in the donut van, who said Chris was his best customer during the festival. Chris played the cover of the Cheers theme again. It’s actually by The Wildhearts and is released as a Double A Side with ‘Top of The World’ in early November.
Chris dedicated Obie Trice - Got Some Teeth to people who have got some teeth. He also thinks the new Sophie Ellis Bextor single Mixed Up world is very 1986. Paddy O’Connell from Celebdaq was on. Chris said he’d just registered to play again and had bought Christina Aguilera, Will Smith, David Beckham, Johnny Vaughan and himself (he is down to £2.22, Dave is still £1.64). Paddy recommended selling Johnny Vaughan, buying Alex from Fame Academy and buying Martine McCutcheon as she has a new book and movie coming out soon. Dave said he heard on the radio today that Lenny Kravitz is dating Nicole Kidman. Paddy didn’t believe him but Chris bought Nicole anyway. Paddy also said that buy Beyonce and Kylie as it’ll be in the papers tomorrow that Beyonce has said she likes to wear Kylie’s knickers. Chris said Dave had ruined his dream by saying it was obviously knickers from Kylie’s new clothes chain.
Richard Park and Paddy Kielty from Fame Academy were both on the show ahead of tomorrow’s final, but obviously at separate times. Richard Park was not too happy when Chris asked him about Kielty and from that moment on Chris licked his arse. Chris said he agreed with him that Kielty interrupts his ‘critiques’ all the time to defend the student singing and say ‘the crowd don’t like that’. Richard said they were the friends and families of the students so were bound not too. Richard said he didn’t care about the booing and Chris said the show needs a bit of honesty in it. Chris asked why he’s not in the Fame Academy full-time now to have a go at students who go out and get hammered etc, as Chris has himself been on the receiving end of such abuse he said. (Park used to be his old boss on Capital) Chris said Park should become controller of Radio 2, then changed his mind to the whole of BBC Radio - as long as he didn’t sack Chris. Park told him to ‘get on with it’ and Chris said ‘yes sir boss’ in a trembling voice and played a record. As for the actual Fame Academy final it’s a one horse race. Alex should win and will win. Richard Park thought so as well and said Chris would play Alex’s records on his show but not Alistair’s. As for Carolynne he said the best she could hope for would be a ‘cruise ship singer’ and she would go out in the first half of the show tomorrow.
