Aled - has the processes for selecting the R1 Playlist changed over the last few years? I vaguely recall hearing in the past how the Playlist meeting was a big meeting every week that just about anybody who worked at R1 could come along to and give their opinion on.

Now it seems from your blogs that it's a much tighter group responsable for it. Am I right? And if so, why did it change?

Thankee!

Aled - well done on producing today. Although I like Rachel, its a change to have someone else on the show from 7.

It was very random and funny during the parts that I listened to. Not sure what it was like from about 8.30 onwards, but look forward to listening to it again.

Why did you give Chris options during the show? I would of though you'd decide which song or feature to do before the link.

Top show! When are you show producer again?

8.30 onwards was hilarious, Al Westwood, I think everyone thought I looked a bit warped giggling away on the way to uni. It was a very good show today.

Yeah it has. It used to be that if you were a Radio 1 producer you could come along to playlist and give your opinion about that week's songs and what should make playlist.

When George "Egg-and-two-chips" took over a couple of months ago he made everyone at Radio 1 who wants to be on the playlist apply for the job. Out of everyone 8 people were chosen, each applied for a specific genre. As you can imagine Radio 1 is quite a busy place so the first thing that used to go when producers were busy was playlist and their appointments with the records companies, which was wrong for such an important and influential playlist. So now that there are 8 we have more music responsibilities and we all research our own genres in more depth. Sam (Jo Whiley's producer) and Rhys are also on the playlist with me. I'm pop (naturally)!

It's resting. We have a lot of stuff we wanted to get through "in this quarter" e.g. Radio 1's Big Weekend so we're resting it to make room for it. It will be back though

Why thank you. I really enjoyed it. As to giving Chris choices on air. Producing isn't an excerise in power-trips. Why threaten tension or worse, the link becoming about me by me being stubborn about what Chris should do next just for the sake of it? Of course if there was an important reason why we should do something next I'd point to it on the screen for Chris and he'd trust it'd be important if I said it was, because he'd know if either song or feature was an option he could go for what he felt like doing.

A producer's role on the CM show is very different to one on other shows. It's more important that I'm armed with as much info about all the options and have them ready to help assist Chris than it is for me to dictatorially tell him what to do next. You don't really tell Chris what to do.

As for doing it off air before the link starts of course, we do discuss what's happening, but when we have long links, or we run over things change and we need to re-evaluate what's important to do next.
