I think that The Office is the only comedy in the last 10 years to be half decent. The fact is that all the ideas and all the jokes got used up in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. And all the comedies in the 90s, and the 2000s are, basically rubbish; but The Office is different, it's fantastically written, exquisetly acted, and the characters, situations, and scripts are all things we can relate to.
The Office is really one of the best comedies around, not just now, but it will stand the test of time; it is innovative, realistic, and a bloody good laugh :D

and don't forget, if you ever worked in an office, it's likely you can totally relate to it, I know I do, even the place I used to work where the David Brent was a receptionist instead of a manager.

Wasn't The Royle Family in the 90's surely a forerunner to the office?

There were good comedies in the 90s just no one watched them. People like us was it called? that was genius.

Red Dwarf. I know that technically started in 1988 but it has had great success, a testament to which is the fact that EIGHT series have been made, and a film is in the works. How many british sitcoms (or even dumb yank ones) can say that?

and Phoenix Nights (and to a lesser extent That Peter Kay Thing, though that evolved into Phoenix Nights really).

Both of these are every bit as funny as The Office IMO.
