Okay, I'm willing to set this thing up this summer. By then I will have about 2-3 months worth of Moyles shows to upload. I'm a web designer and programmer and could sort out the logistics of it if someone (tom) could provide the webspace. We would have to have 2 people recording each day - incase either recording goes balls up.
My setup is a radio pluged into a line-in socket in my pc via a £1.50 phono->phono wire. I then use Audiograbber like a VCR to record 30 minute mp3s (20kbs/mono). At that bitrate, the quality isn't A-Grade, but you can hear what the man is saying and the files are clean - no frequency noise. For a 2:45 hour show it takes up about 25megs which could be uploaded easily overnight on a 56k.
One thing I don't do (but used to when I did this a couple of months ago) is edit out the songs. It takes ages to do, so when size isn't an issue I just include the songs and fast forward through the ones I don't like. I then put the mp3s onto a cdr (I can fit a months worth of shows on 1 cd) and shove that in my portable mp3 player :)
Just wanted to gloat.
the_dr

Let's say there's an hour worth (no songs etc) to upload at 64kbps (so there is some quality) that would be around 30+ mb. That takes around 2 hrs to upload on a normal connection and 2 hrs for anyone to download. Then you must find toones of web space. If you put it all together say you got a giga byte.. That's only around 2 weeks worth of shows...
Not gonna work guys..

Why not keep it all on mp3-CDs and only upload the latest 2 weeks shows? Then log what happens in each show (tie-in with reviews?) and provide a system in which people can request an mp3 of what happened at xx:xx-xx:xx on show x.
64kbs = 500k/minute = 30MB/hour
30MB * 12 shows = 360MB
Thats 4x 100MB accounts!
Some people (Mentioning no names... :) ) have ADSL, so for them uploading will be no problem.
Its possible.
the_dr

i doubt anyone will request a whole show. each show has one or two highlights - comedy moments, parodies etc.
why not start an archive of funny bits on your computer (zip them) and just upload when necessary?

I think people will want whole shows - in years to come it would be interesting to hear a whole show with the old music, newsbeat, jingles, jokes, parodies and everything else. It would be nice to reminiss.
the_dr

Its bad enough us posting sound bites from the show, but if whole shows were to be downloadable then methinks you would feel the wrath of the BBC.
Also - where are you going to find space to store 100MB files without running your own FTP server, and therefore breaking the terms of contract with your ISP, leaving yourself liable for disconnection :)

also the maximum amount of space i could provide at a time is 50MB. i used to be provided with 200MB (i have a mate who works for an ISP called primetheus, but his manager got wind of the scam and now i am down to 50MB). The free space providers such as angelfire will also only provide max 50MB at a time.
this is gonna take some thinking. by zipping a whole show how small can you get the file?

Zipping doesn't work mate. MP3 files are already compressed - so zip files take off 1% at the very most. Try it yourself if you don't believe me.
the_dr

What is the playlist?
Radio 1 has a playlist and has done on and off since 1967, however it still means DJ's can choose music. Records can stay on the playlist longer nowadays as frankly we believe there aren't that many records being made that actually appeal to the very wide ranging Radio 1 audience listening during the day.
Thus we offer a consistent and, I believe, uniquely challenging mix of music in the daytime including presenter free choices. Most listeners tune in for less than one hour so it's important that when they are listening the mix of music is really representative of the total station sound. This is why we need a playlist of records to choose from and to play them consistently and regularly.
In the evenings we offer the biggest commitment to the widest range of genres of any music radio station in the world and we endeavour to bring the best of that to the daytime.
The playlist scheduling system (A list 30+ plays per week, B list 15ppw and C list 5 ppw) allows us to break minority interest artists amongst the familiar hits to the wider daytime Radio 1 audience.
Without such a system there would frankly be no Oasis, no Chemical Brothers, no Travis, no Basement Jaxx and probably no Lauryn Hill. Choices are made from a pool of over 100 new releases that come into the network every week. Over 30 per week are discussed & played in the Wednesday afternoon playlist meeting, having been filtered by Radio 1 producers before they come to the meeting.
Records can stay on the list anything up to around 15 weeks and then are either not played for a while or are reduced in play as these are often our listeners favourite records. Nowadays a hit for Radio 1 is best defined not by its chart position but whether it has wide appeal to our listeners. We check listeners' tastes with regular research of only our most played songs.
Alex Jones-Donelly, Head of Music at Radio 1
Or, you could post the urls to-
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/djs/playlist_explanation.shtml - Explaination of playlist
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/cardiff/thursday.shtml - Excellent discussion (45 mins RealAudio) about the playlist featuring Alex, some small record label bosses and PRODUCER RHYS. Some good questions asked.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chat/chat_playlist.shtml - Web chat with playlist man, no really good questions asked.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/cgi-bin/forums/cgi?cert=ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff&fid=170&did=9231&pg=discussion - Loads of people moaning about bands not getting onto the playlist.
the_dr

I spoke of my legal worries earlier on in the thread, but it seems reasonable if only 2 weeks at a time was available.
the_dr

Cool. That's the idea of me recording the shows now - so we can listen to them ina few years time.
