Ive been thinking about a career in radio as either a producer or presenter.
I have looked through the site and I see some of you present on hospital radio or Internet radio (the_dr, saturday_reviewer, Stickyspanner and Matt mentioned they presented I think).
How did you join those station and what sort of training did you have?

yo,
If you want to get onto Internet Radio, the training they usually do is how to use the software to broadcast... Such places as http://www.digiradio.com etc etc
Hospital Radio - just give your local hospital a ring and ask to be put through to the radio room and just have a chat with them. Training can vary and you may have to go on the wards collecting requests for a while before you start your shows. http://www.hospitalradio.co.uk and join the Hospital Radio One List on e-groups.
If you're young, try and get work experience at your local station (find them at http://www.mediauk.com)
If you're not so young then just put demos together and send them off...
And a note about producing - at your local stations you don't offtenly have them... Only on main stations would you find a whole team such as the CM show.
Cheers
Mike

Same as above really.
Call your local hospital and ask to be put through to the hospital radio.
Before you become a presenter you'll probably have to have been involved for a few months to show that you're trust worthy. Then you should be able to start training. This should involve technical and voice training (this could take from a few weeks to several months depending on how quick you pick i up).
Hope this helps!
M
PS - email me if you need any more help/advice.

Yeah I don't agree either. You need a bit of training before you can go on air. I've been on air with a few work experience people b4 and they always freeze up when I ask them to talk and don't have a clue about any of the equipment. If you are anywhere near the midlands mate I can probably sought you out with a bit of radio experience if u r keen!

When I was at BBC local radio we were not alowed to drive the desk because:-
Only authorised BBC staff are allowed to...
It looked pretty easy... the only hard thing would be getting mic and sound levels right...
Then all you really need to know is how to work mini disc and cd players...
David

They have programs like N-QTX L!VE and ENCO-DAD to assist them with that don't they? That's what i use anyway at "takeover radio"... although there is the manual aspect with that, and not being solely dependant on it! :)

HR stations differ.. Some want you straight on the air others make you visit the sick people for ages... Anyways Clare, get these songs:
Eagles; Spirit in the Sky
The Corrs; Breathless
Monty Python's; Bright side of life
Meatloaf; Bat out of hell
Chris De Burgh; Spanish Train
Bon Jovi; Bad Medicine
Some of the verses make the listners want to die... spose it's a good thing for some of them

Yeh, but still very funny when you edit them and make it like.. "this is radio 1 music" - of course change r1 to the hr :)...
