The Jam, Down In The Tube Station At Midnight

Today's Transcript:

Scooby-Doo was mates with Shaggy, while in the world of music Shaggy shares something in common with Huey from the Fun Lovin' Criminals, because I think they were both in the US Military and served in Operation Desert Storm. Storm is a word associated with teacups. Teacups are something you might find in a china shop. If you owned a china shop, the one animal you wouldn't want to come in would be a bull. Bull, first name Steve, is a footballer who used to play for Wolves. Wolves is also the former club of Nathan Blake. Nathan Blake shares the same surname as the artist Peter Blake, whose painting of John Peel features on the cover of the album 'Right Tide Wrong Speed', which features tracks from many of John's favourite bands such as The Jam, which links to The Jam and 'Down In The Tube Station At Midnight'.

Flaws:

Huey Morgan and Shaggy were indeed both in the Marines, but I can find no conclusive evidence as to whether Huey served during Operation Desert Storm, so we'll give Dave the benefit of the doubt on that one and say seamless.

Bizarre Inc, Playing With Knives

Today's Transcript:

Jam is a preserve, which is also a word associated with woolly mammoths frozen in ice. 'Ice Ice Baby' was a hit for Vanilla Ice, who had a brief thing in the early 90s with Madonna. Madonna has adopted an orphan from Malawi, which is very poor. The opposite of poor is rich. Rich Tea are a popular type of biscuit. Biscuits are sometimes covered in chocolate. Chocolate Puma had a hit with 'I Wanna Be U'. The letter 'U' is letter number 21. If you reverse 21 you get 12, as in D-12, which is a band featuring Eminem's mate Bizarre. If you add 'Inc' to Bizarre you get Bizarre Inc, which links to Bizarre Inc and 'Playing With Knives'.

Reef, Place Your Hands

Today's Transcript:

Knives are really useful if you need to cut up things like vegetables. Vegetables make you grow big and strong. Strong, first name Andrew, is the actor who played Deco in 'The Commitments', released in 1991. 1991 was also the year that Right Said Fred had their debut hit 'I'm Too Sexy'. Another famous song with 'sexy' in the title is 'You Sexy Thing' by Hot Chocolate, which featured on the soundtrack to 'The Full Monty', starring Andrew Carlyle. Carlisle is where Lee Brennan of 911 is from, and his bandmate Jimmy Constable is currently in Upper Street with Dane Bowers. Dane Bowers once did a record with Victoria Beckham, which was kept off the top spot by 'Groovejet', featuring the vocals of Sophie Ellis Bextor, whose mum used to be on 'Blue Peter'. Peter Duncan is a mate of JK from JK & Joel. The 'K' in 'JK' apparently stands for 'king'. King prawns are something you'd find in the sea, as are tropical fish which you might see if you were snorkelling around a reef, which links to Reef and 'Place Your Hands'.

Flaws:

It wasn't Andrew Carlyle who starred in 'The Full Monty' but Robert.

Kym Sims, Too Blind To See It

Today's Transcript:

'Reef' rhymes with 'leaf', which is what might fall from a tree during autumn. Autumn comes between summer and winter. Bernie Winters had a dog called Schnorbitz. Schnorbitz was a St Bernard, which are the type of dog usually used in alpine rescues. 'Rescue Me' was a hit by Fontella Bass. Bass is a type of fish. Fish was the lead singer of Marillion, who had a hit with 'Kayleigh' in 1985. 1985 was also the year of Live Aid, which took place in London and Philadelphia. Philadelphia is a type of cheese. Cheese can be eaten with carrots, which are a good way of improving your night vision. If you didn't eat carrots and something jumped out at you in the dark you might be too blind to see it, which links to Kym Sims and 'Too Blind To See It'.

Flaws:

It's a bit of an exaggeration that carrots help you see in the dark, but not untrue as such, so technically seamless.

Van Halen, Jump

Today's Transcript:

You might be too blind to see if someone broke your glasses and everything was merely a blur. Blur are the band that launched the career of Damon Albarn. If you add an 'L' to 'Albarn' you get an anagram of 'Allbran', which is a type of cereal. Cereal normally requires the addition of milk, which is delivered using a float. 'Float' rhymes with 'coat', which are very warm. If you swap the 'A' in 'warm' for an 'O' you get 'worm', which is something you'd find in the ground. 'Ground Force' is a programme which features Charlie Dimmock. The word 'Dimmock' shares many of the same letters as 'hammock', which in turn is not a million miles away from 'Hamond', as in Richard Hammond, who is recovering after a near-fatal jet crash. Even though Richard Hammond is set to return to 'Top Gear', they'll probably keep him away from the scary stuff and get him to roadtest something safe like a van, which links to Van Halen and 'Jump'.

Today's Transcript:

'Jump' rhymes with 'gump', as in Forrest Gump, who was a film character played by Tom Hanks. 'Hanks' rhymes with 'tanks', which are used by the army. Army of Lovers had a 1992 hit with 'Crucified'. Crucified is what happened to Jesus on the cross. Cross, first name Christopher, had a hit with 'Arthur's Theme'. Arthur was played by the late Dudley Moore, who was big mates with Peter Cook. Peter Cook shares the same surname as Norman Cook, who's better known as Fatboy Slim. Fatboy Slim is married to Zoe Ball, who shares the same surname as Michael Ball, who we once saw in a transit van on the way to Dundee when we did a gig with Clive Warren. A warren is where you should look if you want to find rabbits. Rabbits are what you're supposed to say on the first day of the month, which is supposed to give you good luck. K-Klass, Rhythm Is A Mystery

Today's Transcript:

'Lucky Man' was taken from the album 'Urban Hymns', released in 1997. If you add up the numbers in 1997 you get 26, which is the shirt number worn by Everton's Lee Carsley. Lee Carsley was born in Birmingham, which is where you'd find the Bullring. A bull is an animal you wouldn't want to meet in a china shop. If you were in a china shop and had some china in your hand, you'd probably think of the song by T'Pau. T'Pau were fronted by Carol Decker, who shares the same first name as Carol Thatcher, who won the last series of 'I'm A Celebrity', which is filmed in Australia. 'Australia' was the title of a hit by the Manic Street Preachers. Preachers are what you'd expect to see in an American church. Church, first name Charlotte, is Welsh, as is Tim Vincent, who's from Wrexham. Wrexham also gave us K-Klass, which links to K-Klass and 'Rhythm Is A Mystery'.

Travis, Driftwood

Today's Transcript:

If you add the word 'machine' to 'mystery' you get Mystery Machine, which is the name of the van in 'Scooby-Doo'. 'Doo' can be another word for poo. Dog poo can be a social menace when it fouls the pavement. Pavement are a band from America and a big favourite of Steve Lamacq. Steve Lamacq is from Colchester, who beat Cardiff on Saturday. Cardiff are managed by Dave Jones, who shares the same surname as Aled. 'Aled' is an anagram of 'lead', which is traditionally found in pencils. You can get specialist pencils which are good for drawing. Drawing is what Rolf Harris is an expert at. Rolf Harris is from Australia, which is where 'Neighbours' is made. One of the former characters in 'Neighbours' was called Travis, which links to Travis and 'Driftwood'.

Flaws:

Apparently pencils don't actually contain lead but graphite. Rachel also challenged Dave's assertion that there was a Travis in 'Neighbours', and Dave insisted that he was correct, but having perused the list (at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_pa ... characters), I can see no mention of a Travis.

Today's Transcript:

Driftwood can be a hazard as it can get caught up in a ship's propellor. If you add 'head' to 'propellor' you get Propellorhead, who had a hit with 'History Repeating', which featured the vocals of Shirley Bassey. Shirley Bassey is from Wales, as is Sian Lloyd, who does weather. 'Weather With You' was a hit for Crowded House. Crowded House are from New Zealand, like Russell Crowe. Russell Crowe starred in 'Gladiator' alongside Oliver Reed, who also starred in 'Castaway' with Amanda Donohoe, who was also in 'LA Law'. 'LA Law' also starred Jimmy Smits, who was also in 'The West Wing'. Wings are what link chickens and ducks. Chickens and ducks are both part of Dominic Byrne's liberal vegetarian menu, which now also included bacon. Bacon comes from pigs, which live on a pig farm and feed from a trough which is called a feeder, which links to Feeder and 'Just A Day'.

REM, It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)

Today's Transcript:

Feeder's bass player is called Taka and is from Japan. Japan is a large producer of chopsticks. 'Chopsticks' is also a tune that can be played on the piano. 'The Piano' was a film starring Holly Hunter. Holly Hunter shares one name in common with Hunter the Gladiator, who used to go out with Ulrika Jonsson. Ulrika Jonsson is from Sweden, as is Freddie Ljungberg, who plays for Arsenal. An arsenal is somewhere that you'd keep a cannon, unless you were able to keep it in your back garden. Your back garden is somewhere that might need to be mowed. If you swap the first letter of 'mowed' for a 'T' you get 'towed', which is what would happen to your car if you left it parked illegally in London. London is set to host the Olympics in 2012. REM are fronted by Michael Stipe, who recently painted his face blue. Blue are the band that launched the career of Simon Webb. A web is where spiders live. Some spiders live in toilets in Australia. 'Australia' was a hit from the Manic Street Preachers' album 'Everything Must Go', which has just been re-released as a special edition. If you add 'new' to 'edition' you get New Edition, who were the band who launched Bobby Brown, who later married Whitney Houston. Houston is the city that's home to Beyonce, who'll be appearing this Sunday on Radio 1's Chart Show Live, along with Nelly Furtado. U2, Where The Streets Have No Name

Today's Transcript:

'Finally' was released in 1992, the same year that Benny Hill passed away. Benny Hill shares the same surname as Lauren Hill, who was in the Fugees with Wyclef Jean. Wyclef Jean is from Haiti, which is in the Caribbean. 'Caribbean Queen' was a hit for Billy Ocean. 'Ocean's Eleven' is a film starring George Clooney, who was also in 'A Perfect Storm'. A storm is what you don't want if you're at sea in a wooden boat. 'Wooden Boat' is the title of one of the tracks on the new Take That album. Take That include Jason Orange. Orange is the colour you'd associate with the Dutch. The Dutch were great sailors, and discovered South Africa, which is where the baddies came from in 'Lethal Weapon II', which starred Patsy Kensit. Patsy Kensit is a big fan of Dominic Byrne, and today it's Dominic's birthday, which links to one of his favourite bands, U2 and 'Where The Streets Have No Name'.

Flaws:

The Jackson 5, I Want You Back

Today's Transcript:

If you were living somewhere where the streets had no name, it would be very easy to get lost. 'Lost' is an American drama series filmed on location in Hawaii. Hawaii, in terms of the numbers signifying when it became an American state, is number 50. 50 is half of 100, and in terms of years is half a century. The word 'century' shares the same word origins as 'centurion', which were the soldiers you'd find in Rome. Rome is where Rachel is today, for some conference on producing. The conference league is what Kidderminster Harriers are in, and they're currently in 15th place. If you divide the number 15 by three you get five. Five is a popular number of people to have in a band, and one band with five members is the Jackson 5, which links to the Jackson 5 and 'I Want You Back'.

Ash, Orpheus

Today's Transcript:

The Jackson 5 launched the career of Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson shares the same surname as Colin Jackson, who's a top British runner. Runner is also a type of bean, along with kidney beans. Kidney beans are a crucial ingredient in chili con carne, which is traditionally served with rice. Rice is grown in China in large paddy fields. Paddy fields shouldn't be mistaken for Paddy McGuinness, who's one half of Max and Paddy along with Peter Kay. Peter Kay is from Bolton, as is Danny from McFly. McFly were one of our star guests at Chart Show Live, which took place in Brighton. Brighton is a good place to go if you want to get rock. Rock of a different type is important in archaeology, which is good for learning about history, like the Roman and Greek Gods such as Orpheus, which links to Ash and 'Orpheus'.

Flaws:

Dave declared the link seamless, but I'm somewhat doubtful as to whether archaeology would reveal anything about Greek Gods, as they're largely regarded as mythical.

Today's Transcript:

If you take the last bit off 'Orpheus' and add an 'M' at the beginning you get 'Morph', who was a big mate of Tony Hart. Tony Hart shares the same last name as Jennifer Hart from 'Hart to Hart', who was played by Stephanie Powers, who shares the same surname as Austin Powers, whose nemesis is Dr Evil. Evil Kneivel is a great stuntman who must have been a bit mad. Mad Stuntman featured on Reel 2 Reel's hit 'I Like To Move It'. 'Move It' was a 1958 hit for Cliff Richard and the Drifters. Drifters are a type of chocolate. Chocolate is made from cocoa beans, which are grown in places like Brazil. Brazil is famous for its nuts. Nuts are a popular ingredient in Italian ice-cream. Wham!, Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go

Today's Transcript:

As well as being a group from America, B-52 is also a drink made from Bailey's, Grand marnier and kahlua. The word 'kahlua' shares many of the same letters as 'koala', which is a small animal indigenous to Australia. Australia is where people traditionally wear corked hats to keep away flies. Flies of a different type are what you might see on the front of your trousers. Trousers are a crucial part of a suit, while a suit of a different type is what you'd find in a pack of cards. Cards are what some people like to play on a long journey. Journey South have just finished a tour in Manchester. Manchester is where they film 'Coronation Street', which still stars actor William Roache. If you add the word '*' to 'Roache' you get '*', which are horrible things that need to be killed with a spray. If you remove the first letter of 'spray' you get 'pray', which was a hit for MC Hammer, while 'Praying For Time' was a hit for George Michael. George Michael used to be in Wham!, which links to Wham! and 'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go'.

Flaws:

Adding '*' to 'Roache' doesn't really make '*', and Australians don't really wear hats with corks on - they are a novelty item made strictly for tourists (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cork_hat for more cork hat-based facts).

Black Legend, You See The Trouble With Me

Today's Transcript:

'Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go' reached number 1 in May 1984, a year and five months before Wayne Rooney was born. Wayne Rooney goes out with colleen McLoughlin, who has the same first name as Colleen Nolan, who used to be married to Shane Richie, who plays Alfie Moon in 'Eastenders'. 'Eastenders' star Wellard is a German Shepherd. Shepherd, first name Cybil, starred in 'Moonlighting' alongside Bruce Willis from 'The Sixth Sense'. 'Sense and Sensibility' is a book by Jane Austen. Jane Austen shares one name in common with rugby player Austin Healey, who is probably the only sportsman in the world whose name is the make and model of a car. The Cars are an American band who had a hit with 'Drive'. A drive is what you might have tarmacked. Tarmac is black, and if you add the word 'legend' to 'black' you get Black Legend, which links to Black Legend and 'You See The Trouble With Me'.

Flaws:

Oasis, D'You Know What I Mean?

Today's Transcript:

'You See The Trouble With Me' was released in the year 2000, which was known as the millenium. 'Millenium' was also the title of a hit by Robbie Williams. Robbie Williams shares the same initials as Russell Watson, who's recorded with Faye Tozer from Steps. Steps are what you'd have to climb a lot of if you went up the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower is in Paris. Paris Hilton is a big mate of Nicole Richie, who's the daughter of Lionel. Lionel Richie had a big hit with 'All Night Long'. All night long is how long you'd have to last if you were a security guard. A guard of a different type is what you might have on the front of your fire for protection. Fire can be put out with sand and water. Sand and water are two things you'd find at a desert oasis, which links to Oasis and 'D'You Know What I Mean?'.

Flaws:

The Eiffel Tower has lifts, so no need to climb a lot of steps. There was also some discussion as to whether Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie are still mates, but that one's difficult to establish.

Garbage, Only Happy When It Rains

Today's Transcript:

Into the groove is something you might have to do with a plane if you're a carpenter. Carpenter, first name Harry, is a boxing promoter and the inspiration for the catchphrase "d'you know what I mean Harry", made famous by Frank Bruno. Frank Bruno shares one name in common with Bruno Brookes, who used to do the Chart Show on Radio 1, before the days of JK & Joel. Joel is from Scarborough, which is somewhere we once went on tour years ago, which featured a live performance by Craig David. Craig David is from Southampton, who thumped Leeds 3-1 at the weekend. 'The Weekend' was a big hit for Michael Gray, who shares the same surname as Jennifer Grey, who was in 'Dirty Dancing' with Patrick Swayze, who starred in 'Ghost' with Demi Moore, who was in 'Disclosure' with Michael Douglas, who's married to Catherine Zeta Jones from 'Last Of The Summer Wine'. 'Last Of The Summer Wine' starred David Jason, who then went on to star as Frost. Frost can kill your vegetables, and if you do end up killing them you'd have to throw them in the rubbish. Americans refer to rubbish as garbage, which links to Garbage and 'Only Happy When It Rains'.

The Rolling Stones, Brown Sugar

Today's Transcript:

Garbage are fronted by Shirley Manson, who shares the same surname as Marilyn Manson, who wears makeup and has black hair. Hair is found on most mammals, in order to keep them warm. warm is the opposite of cool in the world of temperature. Temperature is measured using a thermometer, which contains mercury. Mercury, first name Freddie, was the frontman of Queen and bandmate of Brian May, who's married to Anita Dobson, who used to be in 'Eastenders' with Leslie Grantham, who's a big fan of webcams, a bit like Aled. Aled is from Aberystwyth in Wales. If you were to swim west from Wales you'd reach Ireland, which is where Westlife are from. Westlife's Kian Egan goes out with Jodie Albert, who used to be in 'Hollyoaks'. 'Hollyoaks' is set in Chester, which was known as Deva by the Romans, who invented everything from straight roads to hot drinks. If you were drinking a hot drink and wanted to make it sweeter you might add brown sugar, which links to the Rolling Stones and 'Brown Sugar'.

Flaws:

Chris questioned Dave's assertion that the Romans invented hot drinks, and indeed Dave had no evidence to back up his claim. Whilst the history of hot drinks in general is difficult to summarise, the informative page at http://inweekly.net/wordpress/?p=8492 states that coffee originated in Ethiopia in the 9th century, hot chocolate in Spain in the 1500s, and hot toddies in 18th century Scotland, so no Romans involved there. Also, thermometers rarely contain mercury anymore; and Shirley Manson doesn't technically share a surname with Marilyn, as his real name is Brian Warner.

Coldcut featuring Lisa Stansfield, People Hold On

Today's Transcript:

Brown sugar is normally served in coffee, and white sugar goes in tea. Tea is grown in Sri Lanka, which is an island in the Indian Ocean. Ocean, first name Billy, had a hit with 'When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going', which was covered by Boyzone. Boyzone's Ronan Keating is taking part in some charity walks, a bit like Ian Botham does. Ian Botham's nickname is Beefy, which is how you might describe an Oxo cube. Cubism is an avant garde art movement, with one of the greatest exponents being Picasso. Picasso was Spanish, a bit like Penelope Cruz, who used to go out with Tom Cruise, who just married Katie Holmes in Italy. Italians are into cold meats and buffets and stuff, and when you have cold meats out on a buffet you refer to them as 'cold cuts', which links to the Coldcut and 'People Hold On'.

Lisa Stansfield is from Rochdale, along with Andy Kershaw. Andy Kershaw shares the same surname as Nik Kershaw, who had a hit with 'The Riddle'. 'Riddle' rhymes with 'piddle', which is what a child might call wee. A Wii is a games console, which you probably plug a joystick into. A joystick would also be found on a jet fighter. A jet fighter is what Tom Cruise flies in 'Top Gun', the soundtrack to which featured 'Take My Breath Away' by Berlin. Berlin is somewhere where they used to have a really big wall, although it wasn't as big as the Great Wall of China. If you were looking at the Great Wall of China from a great height, the people on it would probably look like ants, which links to Adam and the Ants and 'Prince Charming'.

Billy Corgan shares the same first name as Billy Connolly, who's married to Pamela Stephenson, who used to do 'Not The Nine O'Clock News' with Rowan Atkinson, who's probably best known as Mr Bean. 'Been Caught Stealing' was a hit for Jane's Addiction, whose guitarist Dave Navarro used to be married to Carmen Electra, who appeared in the 'Starsky and Hutch' remake a couple of years ago with Owen Wilson. Wilson Phillips were a band made up of the offspring of the Beach Boys and the Mamas & Papas, who scored a big hit with 'Hold On'. Today's Transcript:

Tiffany now lives in Cannock, not that far away from Stan Collymore. Stan Collymore loves the outdoors and getting close to nature. 'Nature's Law' is a track by Embrace. Embrace did the England World Cup song last summer, entitled 'World At Your Feet'. Feet are an imperial unit of measurement used to calculate length and height. 'Height' rhymes with 'bite', which is what you hope a dog wouldn't do to you if it cornered you in a dark alley. 'Ally McBeal' is a series starring Calista Flockhart, who goes out with Harrison Ford. Harrison Ford shares the same surname as Henry Ford, who's a legendary name in the American motor industry. The American motor industry is centred around the city of Detroit, which is home to the Tamla Motown record label, whose stars include Marvin Gaye and The Supremes.
