Today was the big Southampton show, coming live from the studios of BBC Radio Solent. Chris said he was struggling to cope with the desk as not only was it massively different to the one at Radio 1, but also to the one he used recently at BBC Radio Newcastle. So add this technical chaos to the fact that the whole team were completely knackered and hung over - and you get a complete shambles of a first half hour (and if truth be told a pretty poor show in general). The first half hour was just a catalogue of errors. The studio mics were tinny and far too quiet but for some reason Chris thought they were too loud so turned them down (meaning you could hardly hear what was going on - not such a bad thing as it turned out). There was a truly dreadful first Newsbeat bulletin at 7 o’clock where clips, microphones and beds were all missing at some point and the first few links just didn't make any sense at all. It got so bad that at one point Chris called an emergency on-air show meeting and announced “Oh seriously I’m gonna have to stop now....we’re gonna have to get our act together - this is rubbish”. Dave preferred to call it “a strong start”. Chris suggested that Nemone came back or todays guest Scott Mills drove the desk for him while he did the links on another microphone. Scott said Chris was the Darth Vader of The Master Fader. He was a guest today because he is from Southampton and last night he took out the team out for a wild night of boozing and singing by the south coast. Chris denied he was still drunk at the start of the show even though he did sound it. Highlights from last night included Rachel legging it past security to dance on stage to Peter Andre in Jumpin Jaks, a plastered Dom playing the intro to Hello by Lionel Richie on the hotel piano (but looped for 10 mins) and Rachel receiving a birthday cake in TGI Fridays even though it wasn’t her birthday. However, the nights main talking point took place by the side of a burger van and a local car dealership. It involved Comedy Dave, a car and some snow. Dave decided to express himself in the snow by writing Scott Mills on the bonnet of a nearby vehicle and stupidly announced this on air. Chris called it vandalism and the local police agreed, ringing in to say they wanted to speak to him. A clearly disgruntled Dave said that calling it vandalism was “poppycock”. Dom told him to leave it to the law. Dave said he didn’t think his snow expression would lead to such a kerfuffle. In trying to rescue himself from this mess, Dave frequently told the time - a nasty habit he seems to have picked up recently.

Buzz Off today had a Southampton theme to it...well sort of as it was semi chosen by Scott Mills. It was Wings Of A Dove by Madness, which Dave said is one of his favourite all time Madness records. He was last to buzz on 2:54 with Aled first on 0:23, Rach next on 1:56 and the listeners third on 2:51. Chris talked about the weekend football with Dave, Jules and Dom. Leeds are playing Liverpool and supposed reds fan Byrne bet Chris 50p that Liverpool would win 3-0. It’s also the Carling Cup Final between Bolton and Middlesbrough on Sunday and Chris said he wanted it to be a draw (which it can’t be as its a cup final but he glossed over this fact). Vernon phoned him straight away to ask why he wasn’t supporting Bolton and Chris put him on the air via loudspeaker. Because Scott Mills is doing the chart for Wes this Sunday, Vernon is on air from 1-4pm. I’ve got a feeling it’ll be on tape though as there is no way he’ll miss that match in Cardiff. Juliette is going to watch West Brom play Rotherham for 5 Live tomorrow while tonight Dave is going to his Auntie Caroles birthday party. I may be wrong but I think Chris is going to Luxembourg with Sophie this weekend. He’s not been back since he was 18 and worked at Radio Luxembourg - and she got them tickets to go back for his birthday present.

CRAIG DAVID LIVE ON THE SHOW:

Aled was back in his trusty truck this morning and out and about on the roads of Southampton. His first task was to pick up Mr Craaaigg David, who was coming in to see Chris straight after a full nights work in the studio, with no sleep at all. This might have been the reason why he didn’t seem on top form because for me the interview was pretty awkward listening today. The tone was kind of set from the beginning when Aled and co got stuck in the truck on a ring road while trying to take Craig to the studio. Chris last saw Craig on a flight back from LA last year and Chris said he slept virtually all the way. I kind of got the feeling Craig would rather have been doing that now than talking to Chris. Craig talked briefly about Bo Selecta but said he was getting tired about the whole thing now. He also talked about the time he met Nelson Mandela in South Africa last year. Chris asked Craig if Mandela knew who he was. He said yes. Dave said Mandela met Alan Titchmarsh and Charlie Dimmock last year so he is down with his UK culture. Craig didn’t know what to say to that. He also sounded less than thrilled when Peter Andre came on the phone live to talk to Chris at ten past nine. Peter was travelling in between radio interviews in a car and again thanked Chris for his work and he said he is going to enjoy his moment in the spotlight for the 1 or 2 months that it lasts. Chris said a new car would be fine as a present. Peter said in that case he hoped a mini was OK. Today is Peter’s 31st birthday and it’ll be a happy weekend for him as Mysterious Girl should be number one on The Official Chart this Sunday. Chris wrapped up the interview with Craig by suggesting he got Bubbler Ranx to sing on his forthcoming 3rd album and he also plugged a charity gig Craig is doing at the London Barfly on Wednesday (March 3rd) in aid of Warchild and Shelter.

ALED MEETS JAMES BEATTIE:

After bringing Craig David to the studio, Aled got back in his truck and set off in search of some sleepy students to wake up. He visited the Hamwic Hall Campus of The Southampton Institute and beeped loudly for at least a minute after encouragement from Chris. Dave said it was trucktastic. Chris then set Aled his next task, to go to Southampton Football Club and give James Beattie a birthday cake as he is 26 today. Aled didn’t know who he was but Chris just told him to go and find St Marys Stadium, get someone to fetch Beattie and then give him his nice creamy treat. Aled said he could do that but it would take a bit of time as the truck was currently trapped down a small street near the uni campus...
Aled - We’re kind of wedged down a small alley at the moment..
Chris (with Dave sniggering) - I’m sure you are
Aled - ...so it might take us a while to back out
(Aled and Chris laugh)

Aled did find James in the end and put him live on the phone to Chris at five to ten. James also didn’t sound too chuffed to be on but said he was impressed with Chris’s truck, although he didn’t know what was going on with those y-fronts. Chris said that he’d put in a kind word at Leeds with Eddie Gray for him if he wanted, although James didn’t think so. He thanked Chris for the cake though and said he hadn’t been given the morning off for his birthday and was actually off to training.

CROSS CHANNEL CATCHPHRASE:
SCOTT a Radio 1 disc jockey from Southampton 2
CHRIS who delivers fruit and veg and is also from Southampton 0
**Mills was live from The Red Funnel Car Ferry back from The Isle Of Wight To Southampton**
Everybody found Scott’s butch horn very funny and he said that BBC Radio Solent had even been saying on their travel news this morning that “if you hear any indiscriminate horn blasts, don’t worry - its just Radio 1”. Mills won Carpark Catchphrase despite his crappy phone, with nearby travellers heard shouting gooood mornin in the background. Quote of the morning went to Dave though who said all this chat about ferries and trucks was “very much vehicular based humour”.
