Last Night was Capital Radio’s 30th birthday party in London and as an ex Capital DJ Chris was invited. He said he saw lots of old faces that he hasn’t seen in years - and also spotted Steve Penk, Pat Sharp, Kevin Greening, Clive Warren and Radio 1 Newsbeat’s very own Rodd McKenzie there. Unfortunately though, Chris said he was pestered all night by DJs from Capital’s local radio stations, telling him they’d be up against him on the breakfast show etc. He didn’t bump into Doctor Fox, although he could see him (DJing at his own station’s party) in another room. Chris spent most of the evening in the bar drinking (until 1am) then he went back to his house for a catch-up chat and cup of coffee with Clive Warren. Clive left about 4.30 and Chris said he listened to a bit of Wes on early breakfast before he went to sleep. Chris said it was a bit ironic as he was going to bed at the same time he’ll be getting up at in 3 months. Chris is going up to Elland Road to watch Leeds play Manchester United tomorrow, although more in hope than expectation.
Dave is going to Goodison to watch Everton v Southampton on Sunday, and Rachel (who was back today by the way) thought about going to watch Kiddy Harriers play tomorrow as she is going back to Kidderminster, only to find out she’d got her facts wrong and they were in fact away at Swansea. Chris did a good impression of her saying ‘oh, it’s a bit empty this week isn’t it.’ In an attempt to please fans of egg-chasing, Chris and Dave also tried to talk about the rugby games this weekend. Chris said all rugby players are just bloody big fellas and Dave added ‘with necks the size of your waist.’ Chris said he’ll support Bradford against Wigan in the Super League final tomorrow as he's got to support the Yorkshire teams. David Garido though was the unlucky one given the impossible task of explaining to Chris and Dave the ins and outs of England v South Africa in the Rugby World Cup tomorrow (after the 4.30 sport.)
George from Newsbeat completed the Mini Pops Quiz this morning without any help and Chris said the site it was taken from got 40,000 hits yesterday - more in a day than they usually get in a month. Somehow in less than a minute Chris was quizzing George on her love life and again she didn’t seem too impressed with being asked and went into a mood for the rest of the link.
Paddy O’Connell of Celebdaq fame was on the show today in a very strange couple of links. Apparently ex-Arsenal goalkeeper and ITV Sport presenter Bob Wilson was occupying Paddy’s pre-booked showbiz closet seat in TV centre. Paddy was on the phone and said he could see Bob Wilson and Matt Lucas (George Daws) chatting. He asked if Chris wanted to speak to either of them about ten times but Chris told him no and told Paddy to barge past them shouting abuse and then run off. Paddy chickened out and Chris called him a yellow belly and said he’ll take him for some karate lessons so next time he can kick Bob Wilson’s head in or that of anyone who gets in his way. This link was far more interesting than the actual Celebdaq one once Paddy was in the showbiz closet. He said buy Cheryl Tweedy, Blaine, Rooney and Jonny Wilkinson - but his advice is usually wrong as Chris pointed out.
71 days to Christmas and the Xmas lights campaign is still on, with all genuine offers set a deadline of 5pm today to get their bids in to the show. The winner will be announced next week but so far the main contenders according to Chris are Inverness, Swansea, Royston in North Hertfordshire, Bicester in Oxfordshire and Producer Rachel’s very own Kidderminster. Chris said the prize not only included a visit to turn on the lights from himself, Dave and Rachel, but also your very own camp Christmas Elf Aled. Chris also said that after big talks with Ben Cooper, Andy Parfitt, Jenny Abramski (head of BBC radio) and Greg Dyke, a whopping 25 pence of licence fee payers money had been granted to give away as a prize for today’s Mystery Afternoon Sound.
