From The Sun.

CHRIS MOYLES kicked off his first Radio 1 breakfast show with a swagger today, vowing to save the sinking slot on his own terms.

In an exclusive chat he promised me he would not listen to Beeb bosses wanting him to tone down his raunchy style.

He has been mouthing off for years about how he is the saviour of Radio 1 — and today he got the chance to prove it. The DJ was up at 4.30am to take over from SARA COX.

Chris is convinced he has what it takes to bring back the 620,000 listeners Sara lost in just over three years.

The Afternoon Show veteran continues with his presenting team, including Comedy Dave.

He told me: I am the saviour of Radio 1. I've been saving the station for years.

I’ve been doing the Afternoon Show for five years and hopefully I'll do the Breakfast Show for five too. We deserve it as a team and we'll do a really good job

When Radio 1 bosses finally offered Chris the early-morning show he refused to do it unless it was on his terms.

Chris explained: I said that I'd only take the job if I wasn’t going to be restricted in any way.

There has to be a lot of trust. I'm aware of the responsibility but I'm not going to be told what I can't say or what I can't do.

I got told off for talking about sex once and I was told I couldn't talk about any of the other DJs on Radio 1. There have been a few things that have got me into trouble in the past but all that has stopped now and they have told me to pretty much do what I want.

Chris has got a job on his hands to win listeners back to Radio 1.

Figures for the show are down to just over 5million — the lowest in years and a long way from its 1970s heyday when TONY BLACKBURN entertained an audience of 20million.

One big rival will be former Big Breakfast telly host JOHNNY VAUGHAN.

The Sun film columnist has replaced CHRIS TARRANT as the voice of Capital FM's breakfast programme for London. It is broadcast across Britain on digital radio.

But Moyles laughed and said: I can't wait for the challenge of taking on Johnny.

We’re the No1 pop show and it's the most important show in the country. We'll easily eat him for breakfast.

Chris was keen to play down the rivalry between him and Sara Cox that followed the news last October that she was to be axed.

He said: I sent her some champagne for her last show — although she can't drink at the moment because she's pregnant.

But I never heard her show because I was always asleep.

Let's hope people don't do the same thing during your show, Chris.

Sat and today are up
