Completly off topic but.......
Im in need of some help please...I have msn 7.5 and am running it on windows xp with McAffee Virus Scan/Security Centre & Windows Defender on wireless broadband. Recently its been signing itself in and out all the time & is really annoying. I read somewhere that I need to disable something but cant remeber what or where I read it. Anyone out there clever enough to help...please..Im getting pretty annoyed with it. :(

Sorry if people dont think its appropriate to post this on here but I know there are alot of clever computer people who hang around on here :)

thanks,
Nasha

Geeks Nasha, they are called geeks. Or nerds.

Since I am neither of the above, i may be wrong with this. Sign out of MSN and uncheck the box that says "remember my password" or words to that effect then sign back in. Or it might be "sign me in automatically".

Pretty much what Foot-Loose said, but Nasha, I wish people I deal with in Tech Support gave as much information as you. Half of the stuff we get is basically "theres something wrong with the program - fix it!!!"

Do you tell them to turn it off, wait 30 seconds (???) and turn it back on again?

Sometimes.

I have also had to say "have you tried kicking it? YES? well that's probably why it's not working then"

One of my dads friends works in a pc help desk place for businesses. He was telling me about a guy that phoned up to tell him that the pc had just completly died. After asking a few standard questions, my dads friends asked if he had touched the plug? "No" was the reply.

He decided it must have been a fuse that had blown so he asked the guy to unplug it.

"I can't" was the reply. "There's been a power cut and I can't see behind the computer."

hmmmmm... I hate to be the ever sexy and always entertaining cynic but that does reek of urban myth. I've heard that a few times, and it's always "my dad, or my brother who works for and IT dept".

i thought that myself, but the guy looks and acts like jack black so I respect him.

Whether its true or not is not really the point, its still funny.

McAffee products are known to cause many, wide ranging problems; so many, infact, that it is often easier to uninstall it and install something else than try to fix them. To be fair though, the same can be said for Windows too.

Philosophical question: is it possible to be off-topic in an off-topic section?

Similar has happened to me, and it has happened on occasion at Tech Support centres.

However there are far better (i.e dumber and more entertaining) ones out there.. try the various categories at http://www.rinkworks.com/stupid/ for some gems.

and Nortons... which CANT be uninstalled except for by a tool from Symantec website. Seems they 'forgot' to include an uninstaller in the later versions and add/remove programs doesn't usually work.

Tophers attempt to type in "northern" amuses me more than the joke.

I feel this is as good a time as any, rather than start a new thread, to ask about anti-virus.

I have been using Norton for about three years now and they have never let me down.

I have to renew with them now and im thinking that its not worth the money. I have heard of folk using AVG Anti-Virus (i think thats what its called). Do any of you use it? Can you compare it to Norton?

Duscuss ...

When I had Windows, I always used to use Avast anti-virus, it's free and has a fairly decent track record. Norton, on thr other hand, have a horrible track record, with slow updates to virus definition tables, and very buggy software. Norton, along with McAffee, are the jokes of the software world, so I would advise you to avoid them.

As for AVG, I've never heard anything bad about them, and I have heard a few people praise them from time-to-time, but I have no direct experience with it.

I have AVG Anti-Virus and have had no problems with it. I picked it because it was free and was recommended by a friend. Also, they have released a new 7.5 package which is supposed to be an even more improved software...info on it here and here
