I know exactly what they mean. People who hate the log either didn't give it a chance, or just can't see the dimension of comedy that league lovers can. It's a shame you haters don't get it, but what do you expect when you're all soooo 'egregious' yeah - go and google that one you fat old has been.

See I found League of Gentlemen funny. It's not your usual 'laugh out loud/slapstick funny but it's brilliantly surreal.
And Psychoville is excellent (apart from the last episode, which was rushed, confusing and shite.)

I suppose subjective is the word. I don't know if League of Gentlemen is well written or funny or not, but I don't care. Telly is there to make me feel happy, and just looking at that programme makes me feel revolted. I'll happily take anyone's word for it being funny, but its just telly, and if looking at it makes me go "eeeew" then I'll do something else.

I find it a bit of a curate's egg. There were some lovely sketches that blended humour (sight gags, paradox) with pathos (Mark Gatiss especially) but then spoilt by sketches which were downright 'dark' for the sake of it (bleeding noses etc.). The grotesque characterisations were absolutely essential to the brand of humour but even I found some of the images unecessarily icky (explicit suckling -haha-oh-christ-yuck!). The repeated crowd-pleasing appearence of PapaLazarou were a bit contrived (during their live shows the audiences would cheer at the mere sight of him, before anything funny was said - bloody stoodents). This was also all during that era where 'dark comedy' was seen as the future by commisioners and so displaced the more traditional/mainstream comedy enjoyed (and missed) by wider audiences. Unfortunately many of these writers thought that audiences could be shocked into laughter purely by presenting depressing/discomforting situations instead of actual 'jokes'.
