Just me that didn't think he was offside at that second goal anyway? I thought he was level.

Agree Van Bommel should have been carded for his horror challenge that didn't even get a foul though. But I'm kinda glad it wasn't given the quality of the goal which followed it. An absolute peach of a strike.

I'm not sure how van Bommel finished the match on the pitch though, how many cautions did he get? And he only got a yellow in time added on, after a horrendous catalogue of totting up of bad fouls.

I know there are two matches left to go, but I genuinely think if there is a Player of the Tournament award it ought to go to Diego Forlan. His work rate, effort, committment and effectiveness have been incredible, and he lifted the Uruguayan team way beyond their level to get this far in the competition.

I'm sure there are other thoughts on that - who would you nominate for Player of the Tournament?

Agreed. I thought the rule of offside was that there had to be light between the two players when RVP had only his foot in front of the defender.

That isn't the rule. The rule is any part of your body with which you can score a goal. If Pele was playing now he would have been more lethal as he wouldn't have had to worry about his erection playing him off.

Either way it'll be a first time winner won't it? Also did I hear that if Spain win, it'll be first time that a country has won the Euro Championships and World Cup one after the other? I think France did it the other way round in 98 and 00 though

Yep first time for either making whoever wins the 8th nation to win the World Cup. I believe you're also correct regarding the Euro/World Cup winning.

Seeing as this is Holland's third time in a final I'm hoping they do it this time round :)

Like the commentary isn't bad enough, it's now going to focus on one guy rather than the other 22. Great.

Still, well done to Howard Webb. The Champions League final and the World Cup final in the same year. That's not bad going. He must be delighted the English have been so shit at football recently.

I remember reading in Pierreluigi Collina's autobiography that as a massive football fan he was always terribly conflicted in tournaments becuase he knew the better Italy did the smaller the chance of him getting the crucial matches to ref. He did allude to mixed feelings when Italy did badly, but I don't think he would have thought of himself as "delighted", Neither do I imagine Howard Webb is in that context.

I hope you're wrong about the commentary though Munki - although I have a feeling you may not be..........

Did anyone notice it was the World Cup Final last night? :D

I started off rooting for the Netherlands, but as more and more yellow cards (and surely there should have been more red?) came in I switched my allegiance to a draw, as I wanted it all to end with penalties. That late goal was amazing though. Too bad it'll make everyone forget that the 3rd place play-off was a much better match. 8)

Well done Spain!

The third-place play off WAS a much better match... but it was a nothing match really, wasn't it. We watched at my aunt's and everyone who wanted Netherlands to win had pretty much switched by half time. How the Dutch can complain about the refereeing is beyond me..... their cause for complaint was much less than Spain's really.

Although I hadn't been rooting for Spain, it would have been much more of a refereeing travesty if Holland had won, I reckon.

Howard Webb did a fine job I reckon, although I agree with Topher - the Dutch complaints were ridiculous. De Jong should have been sent off for * fly-kicking Xabi Alonso, then Arjen Robben should have picked up a second booking when he kicked the ball away in to the Spanish net. At least one player deservedly saw red. It wasn't much of a match, but I'm so happy Spain won, I just wish I'd stayed in Sevilla until today! It would've been incredible. The one other thing that annoyed me slightly are people complaints that Spain only scored 8 goals in total to win the World Cup. As unimpressive as that sounds, they also conceded a mere 2 throughout. Now's impressive.

I also watched the match surrounded by Dutch fans. Score.

I never wanted Spain to win the World Cup but I'm glad they beat that Holland side. They should be banned from the next world cup for their complete disregard of the spirit of the match itself. Unbridled cynicism - ok I get that they prioritise winning above all else, and that would have justified playing defensively and trying to close the game down, but that wasn't playing defensively, that was plain thuggery.

On the up side, I did watch the third place play off and Uruguay yet AGAIN were incredibly unlucky not to win. It was probably the best match of the tournament, and I enjoyed watching it with three other people, only one of whom was remotely interested, the other two tolerated us beautifully!

Huge congratulations to Diego Forlan who totally deserved the Player of the Tournament award. Not just for his own achievements on the pitch, but for the way he lifted his team to so far beyond their level they reached the semi final, and could have gone further. They'd have played a far better final than Holland for a start.

ITV may as well give up and cater for the football haters!
