Filter apps are essentially for mobile use, and all photographers would agree that you'd have to be very skilled to get a nice looking photo from a mobile (en masse, that is -
some phones are going to be ridiculous in the near future). The instagram/hipstagram/camera+/facebook camers etc. is a way of turning photos which are organic & spontaneous (and taken by 'normo's' who don't have any skills when it comes to photography) and making them a little bit prettier.
It's not to replace real photography, just to make non-photographers feel like they're making something pretty. Not everyone has a lovely camera, and not everyone has it with them at a time where a nice moment may randomly appear
