In Bedford there are 2 Tescos already and now they're opening one in the town centre on the High Street, taking the place of a bar (Bedford Lounge) which has been closed for about a year.

Personally I'm happy because I think they will only be selling food and it will be handy to be able to get some food at a decent price when in town. There is a Costcutter less a minute from where Tesco is opening but it's not cheap so people will always choose Tesco.

It's likely to be quite small which will probably mean they won't sell any CDs or DVDs which is a shame since the town centre only has WH Smith which sells them now.

it depends what you're talking about. I'm sensitive about funerals and dying and the like. I know they weren't mocking a specific person. I just found it macabre, and not in a way that makes the point about their shops closing.

It would be a shame for Newport Pagnell because it is a lovely high street, I haven't seen that bargain pound shop before though..?

Topher wrote:It's further down, opposite the butcher's and next to the bakery. We walked past it but it would have been shut, so the big sign above the shop would have been folded away.

catherine wrote:He got me roses from tesco, hmph.

Topher wrote:I knew you were going to say that. In my defence, I didn't know I was going to see you until 10pm and Tesco was the only place open.

catherine wrote:What about for our one month anniversary?

Topher wrote:Stop picking on me or I'll tell your mum.

catherine wrote:We're only joking. I don't expect anything off Chris so anything is a nice surprise.

Topher wrote:Haha that makes me sound so shit.

I thought the mock funeral idea was a bit ridiculous too actually. I know what they were trying to do, but then they've started posing for photos with smiles on their faces! Mad.

It's all about quality and cost. Tesco sell products that are of an acceptable quality, and due to their size can source products at low prices. This is a winning situation for the consumer as products can be ofered at lower prices than most other retailers can offer. My only exception is that if I want good quality meat, I will always shop at the local butchers. This is sited directly next to my local Tesco, and they have traded along side each other for the last 25 years or so. The message is clear, if you offer a good quality product customers will return. Meat is much cheaper in Tesco, but that, for me anyway, is irrelevant. Cut flowers is another example where the local florist wipes the floor with Tesco, and they too have been on my high street for as long as I can remember.

I've never seen what's so taboo about death to be honest, but then maybe that's because my own death doesn't worry me in the slightest (although people close to me dying does terrify me). We're all going to die in the end, why shouldn't we be able to make light of the subject?

We have a similar problem here.

We have a Campbells soup factory here. About a year or so ago it was bought out by Premier Foods and they are no longer going to be using the site.

There is a Tescos supermarket next door and they have bought out the entire plot from what I can tell. This means that what has become an iconic symbol of King's Lynn (the Campbells tower) is going to be knocked down

Only pic I can find of it. If someone can tell me how to get the pics to display in the thread I'd be grateful!

You have to right click on the image itself and go to 'Properties', then get the image address (or URL) and stick it inside the img tags like this:

No offence, but that seems to me to be a bit like the Stewartby brickworks chimneys not far from here... everyone in Bedfordshire loves them, I just find them unsightly and ugly.

There are four left I think and they're now grade II listed, which is a bit ridiculous if you ask me.

The latest Tesco in my area is the Tesco Express in the town centre - and I have to say I think thats a really good thing. In common with a lot of other town centres, ours has for many years been a great place to buy clothes, visit a bank, buy shoes, get coffee etc - the one thing that you couldnt get was your weekly shopping - not without having to go to five different places and cover at least a couple of miles, which in a lunch break isn't really feasible. We had a crappy little Spar on the High Street and a small Sainsbury's tucked away down at the dismal end of town. Also there is a fair amount of residential property in our town centre, and the people there would have to get in their cars and travel to an out of town supermarket to do their shopping. Now, there is a Tesco strategically placed and easy to get to for anyone living or working in the town.

However - it is located in a large premises which has, over the years, been home to a number of failed retailers, and nothing was demolished or built in order to put it there. Tesco merely filled a space that was available, in the same way as Waitrose are doing a mile up the road. I think that makes a difference to how the local community will view things.

I understand what you're saying and i'm not scared of my own death at all. But the deaths of quite a few people close to me have made me find the whole subject sad and upsetting. I'm not saying everyone who has lost people would feel the same (most of us here will have lost at least one person), but I can't help the way I feel.

Ask the people of Linwood what they think of Tesco. Bucks the trend of the rest of the country because there they have the biggest toilet of a town centre which Tesco have bought up and will demolish and build a new one - complete with other shops.

Eh... Linwood's just outside Paisley in case you're wondering. The Proclaimers mentioned it in a song once.

I think it's just the 2 left now. The one with Stewartby on and one other. I think it depends whether you live there or locally. Those towers were like a beacon of tradition for the area. The Stewartby Brickworks was such a massive thing and they represent the town's history. If you're not from there, they're just brown chimneys :D

It really is a toilet as well.

That's where I worked when I was a sofa.

Since when has something got to be pretty to be of significance? A building which represents the growth of a town, and is associated with the foundations the town was built on is significant and, in context, probably worth preserving. Its daft to say that if it isn't pretty it isn't important.

Did you ever see that S1Jobs advert with the guy walking around dressed up as a toilet? That was filmed in Linwood. I thought it was apt.

Tesco' sell Cardigans, as do M&S and many other high street clothing shops, Virgin and HMV sell music from the Cradigans, and you could go to Cardigan Bay from any Travel Agent, so all those included your answer is 187 in Portsmouth 12,498 in the Uk and 41,298,889 outlets globally.

Well you did ask.

I'm sad to hear that. Wolverton is where I was born (well, actually that was a Northampton hospital, but y'know) and grew up in the years before I moved up north. I hope it hasn't changed too much for the worse. :(
