Des O'Connor was confirmed today as Des Lynam's replacement as the host of Countdown, I would have preferred someone like Paul Merton but he'll probably grow on me.

Am I right in thinking that Des Lynam quit because he didnt like the distance that he had to travel everyday?

I think that Paul Merton isnt old enough and his sense of humour wouldnt suit countdown, however I think that Des O'Connor is more suited to the role, not the first person I would have thought of but certainly good enough none the less. I wish him good luck

Des O Bloody Connor.

He swans here he swans there, without a care in the world, it might bring some sort of joy if the presenting jobs were all lined up like a death-row scenario, at least with the have i got news for you ideology you crave, they wheel in a new presenter each time!

I'm still waiting for carol to get sucked through the vowel box forever and ever. Not a fan of the show in any way, I don't expect you to take my opinion seriously therefore. God bless xx

The official line is that Des travelled up to Yorkshire weekly, and stayed over - and he didn't like it, the combination of the journey and being away from home. I can see his point, but I think that if he had been a big success as presenter rather than a bit of a nothing, he might not have disliked it quite so much.

I like Paul Merton too, but I think a show like Countdown would be in danger of becoming the Paul Merton Show if he fronted it, I can understand why they would want to go for someone a bit more understated.

I think they're persueing a policy of only hiring people called Desmond now............... Mr Tutu apparantly turned the job down due to the commute and unfortunately Desmond Dekker passed away earlier this year.

The only man left on this planet that is right for this is Chris Fry.... no he's a food technoligist for Tesco, Steven Fry, he has the intelectual snobbery to pass this off. Des is too thick, and that Mel he used to present with, way better than CV
