Jay messaged me telling me how to download a show (not through a catch up service). I don't know if we are OK posting it here or not, but it's really straightforward. And my guess would be that it might be the same file as what gets recorded, so the quality may be the same anyway?

ianpwilliams wrote:Do we know what quality the mp4 direct download is (ie downloading the show after broadcast) compared to recording the mp3 stream? As much as I'd like to record it live I don't have much time in the mornings to be booting up, starting a recording, and then scheduling a shutdown.

Yeah, I'm not going to do that every day. I will for the first day, but will set up an automated system after that. I know one app that will wake a pc from hibernation and start an app, so I'll set that up to wake, record and shut down.

I've just recorded a few minutes of Radio X UK (I'm assuming that's the right stream? It sounds like the same thing as when you click to listen on the Radio X website), and I'm now downloading the mp3 that it playing the stream, so that I can compare and contrast. However, I have no idea how big this mp3 is (5.6MB so far), so it might be a while...

That would be useful. When do you think you could have it uploaded by? I may just try recording the first one myself anyway. And is 192kbps doable in stream writer? I usually prefer that to 128.

Also, do you need to turn options off eg detect songs, ads etc? Because they sound like it could produce a split file.

I usually get in at around 6 so hopefully it'll be up by half 6. I'm off every Wednesday and Thursday though so I'll be able to upload on those days as soon as the show is over.

I have no idea, I just record at 128 don't want to press the wrong thing and muck it up.

Don't think so, it just records as one long file for me till it's scheduled stop time.

I get home a lot earlier than that because I start earlier, so I'll record Monday's show myself and hopefully I can have an edited version uploaded by early evening.

I will try downloading the show too though to compare, because if it's virtually impossible to tell the difference then downloading would be so much more convenient.

If you put it on a C90 then it would work in Comedy Dave's car

ianpwilliams wrote:Are you able to shutdown the computer afterwards, or would that require another programming for a scheduled shutdown?

You can schedule a shutdown in windows with the following command:

Code: Select allshutdown -s -t [seconds]

Where [seconds] is how many seconds before it shuts down. If you allow for a bit of overlap, a seconds value of 13500 would shut it down after 3.75 hours

So if I start stream writer recording for 3.5 hours, then run the command

shutdown -s -t 13500

Then it should shutdown after the recording has finished?

How do I do this in Windows 7? I've just noticed that there is no "Run" command on the start menu.

That's a command, isn't it? So you need to open 'Command Prompt' and enter it in there. Just use the search bar on the Start menu to find 'Command Prompt', and then enter the command. (It's under the 'Accessories' folder in the Start menu).

Ok thanks. In the meantime I looked online as to how to do scheduled shutdowns, and it was talking about using the Task Scheduler. I did wonder why I should go through all that when I can just run that single command instead, but I went ahead and created a weekday 10:15am shutdown task anyway. But now I can't see the task in my Task Scheduler. Do you know where it might be? I'm guessing it should be listed under Active Tasks (there are 61 in there), but it doesn't seem to be there.

Edit: never mind, found it.

So would people recommend task scheduler or the command method?

I recommend you do the best you can. You never failed before so why now? Just so long as the entire show is recorded. (On a personal note, Can you please upload the un-edited version aswell?).

ianpwilliams wrote:Yeah that shouldn't be a problem. I'm thinking that the edited version may well end up being quite short, what with the news, music, and ads.

I doubt It'll be any shorter than the afternoon shows on radio 1.
