The place where everyone hangs out, chats, gossips, and argues

Anyone getting board with Chris' constant bullying of Matt Fincham. I know it's supposed to be a but of fun, but I think sometimes it's pretty obvious that Chris really doesnt like him and just want to put him down and embarrass him. Sometimes seems like school-boy bullying sh!t to me...

Thanks very much for the invitation, I was feeling quite inhibited until then.

No point to make, I just wanted to clarify your point of view. I don't share it, but I'm not going to argue about it.

Thank you Ed, for your impeccable manners. I too have no wish to argue, so that's a relief (phew!).

Thank you also, for clarifying that you don't agree with me. I'm sure that point could have been made (without argument, of course) a few posts ago, but hey.. at least you now know how long I've been listening to the show for...

PS, should with wish to comment on this, or any future posts I may create.. please do feel free to jump right in and make your point as soon as it occurs to you, without waiting for my inviting you to do so. I find it speeds up the whole 'please comment on my original post as I'm interested to hear you're opinions' process quite significantly.

Kind Regards,

Jim.

Jim, welcome to the forum.
I don't think the 'stick' that Chris gives Matt Fincham indicates that he doesn't like him, infact quite the opposite! If Chris really detested Matt do you think he's involve Matt so much in the show? And besides, If Chris has a problem with a member of his team I'm sure he'd have the power to remove and replace him? The 'teasing' he gives members of the team (i think 'Bullying' is wayyy too strong a word) is part of the normal flow of the show, we had it with Aled, Carrie, even Dave.

P.S - a little heads up - relax a little, if you read around this forum it's full of sarcasm, digs, insults and in-jokes. it's part of the course here so take as good as you can give and we're all happy campers. Or maybe you thought that Ed was bullying you...

Hi Zoot,

Thanks for the comments. I know what you mean.. it just seamed to me that Chris sometimes goes a little further with Matt than any of the others.

Thanks for the heads up.. I just prefer it that people say what they have to say and not p1ss around with back-handed comments. I dont think Ed was bullying - just wasting my time with pointless questions.

PS: The saying is 'par for the course' (it relates back to an old golfing term), not 'part of the course'. Just a little heads up ;) (sorry mate, wasnt being sarcastic, just couldnt resist).

Maybe it's just me, but it reminds me of the kind of treatment you might expect the new boy to get in other jobs. Take the piss out of his love life, get him to make the tea, get him to carry your bag of tools... okay, so maybe the last one doesn't quite fit but you get the idea.

I like the Chris Moyles show precisely because it tries to be normal. It often reminds me of listening in on the work environment with the usual piss taking, gossiping type of stuff that goes on in between actually doing your job. I'm fairly sure Chris has said on numerous occasions that this is what he's going for with his show. If taking the piss out of Matt helps that along, then I'm all in favour.

It's only the usual touchy feely moany faced bastards* that are intent on ruining this country that seem to have a problem with it. And if it wasn't for the fact that their job is to present to the nation then they wouldn't be able to moan about it because they wouldn't know it went on. After all, you don't hear many complains from them about the same thing in other workplaces!

* The same folk that no doubt are responsible for shows like "Holloway" that I saw this week and was appalled to see the living conditions prisoners get in their hostels. They were coming across as if we were supposed to feel sorry for the folk getting transferred or otherwise split from their friends! Or feel sorry for the girl who had no home to go to when she left yet her mum sent her a bloody colouring book! They're prisoners for * sake!

End of rants.

Ha funny.

It's like a pack of dogs when you lot smell a bit of blood.

I hope Chris and Matt have an understanding of what is being said on Air, I think they must do. The noise we listen too sounds so relaxed and amiable, but when you see pictures of them in the Studio it is a very forced and un-natural style of communication. They have to talk, press buttons, and they are always looking at the clock for timing. The skill of Chris and the team is that we do not sense this very often. So I think much of what is said is said with an understanding of what is real and what is about making great radio. We can all to easily forget they are there to entertain, and as professionals will take this very seriously. The fact they are like a member of the family, in the car on the way to work or school, or what ever, means it is too easy for us to force upon them sensitivities which are in actual fact our own.

Since America, and the "decline" in listeners I think they will have gone right back to brass tacks about what the show must be like, and mickey taking will have been one key ingredients I feel sure.

They spent hours with the trailer gag, just to get a clip of Matt saying he's shagging his Mum, or Will Young, or Will Youngs Mum or something, so they obviously take it seriously.

Hello & welcom to the forum.

As someone who has been bullied in the past I'd say that Chris doesn't bully so much but tease. Chris has always done this with Broadcast Assistants/Assistant Producers, I just think that Matt bites easier more than anything.

Chris Always used to tease Melinda (BA from Oct 1998-Dec 2000) mainly for his apparent string of Page 3 Girls, smoking, being off sick "every other week" (allegedly) and alleged laziness. It adds something to the show I feel, the difference being that Melinda would either laugh it off or shout out "oih, leave it" when Chris went a bit too far (check out the archive thread for examples, BTW that wasn't meant as a shameless plug, more evidence of Chris teasing rather than bullying fellow colleagues). He tried it with Lizzie (BA from Jan 2001-Sept 2002) but because she never bit back & just laughed everything off he teased her less, plus half of the tiem when she had a go at her she agreed anyway ).

I think if Chris was really bullying anyone the bosses of Radio 1 would have pulled him in ages ago, plus Matt would have probably complained long before now seeing as he's been part of the team for about a year.

I agree with you Munki Bhoy, although didn't see "Holloway" so can comment on that.

I wish he would leave Fincham alone, but not because I think he's being bullied, more because this whole "I'm not talking about my love life but please don't ever stop asking me about it because I LOVE being the centre of attention" is irritating, and Matt Fincham himself is dull.

One thing worse than dead air and that's dull air.

Fincham doesn't realise Karl Pilkington had to work hard on his act.

See I like Matt Fincham, but then again I like everyone. I think someone needs to be the "victim" of the show and since he's the new boy he gets it as has been said earlier. Chris took the piss out of Joce beforehand. Of course Matt likes his time on air, who wouldn't given that he chose to work in media. If he wants to keep his love life quiet then he's entitled to. He may just still be in the early stages where neither has actually said it but it's implied and to say it would change things. There could be any number of reasons.

But I like everyone.

I don't consider it bullying, I reckon there is lots of off air banter that happens between the whole team and Matt gives back as good as he gets, he is alright Matt Fincham, my favorite Fincham moment was him copping a feel of Carrie:

I like the well-timed dead air on Chris' show, the team manage to pull it off well and it gives the show a bit of a charm compared to other 'we have to always make you hear noise' shows. It's especially well-used after a punchline I feel.
