Aled Haydn-Jones Podcast Interview with Dominic Byrne, Radio 1: Newsbeat. December 2006
Interviewed by Aled Haydn Jones, Producer.
A: We are now sitting in the newsbeat office, holding up the news which will be going out in a quarter of an hour because I’m here to talk to a very important and busy man, hence the noise behind me
D: Busy typing
A; Mr Dominic Byrne
D: Hello!
A: Hello Dom
D: Hello ..
A: How are you?
D: I’m very well thank you very much.
A: How weird, you’re on my podcast!
D: I know.. It’s nice to be on your … pod.
A: Now thank you for being on my pod. The reason why I’ve asked you to have a little chat with me on my pod, is because in the forum.
D: Yeah
A: … and that’s what this podcast is about …
D: Mmm
A: … is what we do is ask the forum questions and I’ll talk about them on the podcast. So I spoke to the forum and said who out of everyone would you like me to talk to next?
A: Unfortunately she wasn’t available
D: Hahaaaa.
A: So, the next best one was you- Dominic Byrne !
D: That’s brilliant, thank you very much.
A: They voted you the favourite team member
D: Thank you very much to everyone who listens to Aled’s blogpods
A: You can imagine how offended I am being my website that they voted you the favourite team member but you know….
D: Is that not including you?
A: … No, that’s not including me, yes. They prefer you.
D: I presumed you’d be number 1 and anybody else would be second.
A: I mean what more could you do, create your forum and you know do your podcast. But no, I’m joking
D: So what, I’m better than you … ?
A: You are better …
D: … and it’s your own website?
A: … and they like you!
D: That’s really good, thanks very much.
A: So I said I’d ask you a few questions and the kind of questions they want to know are things like the obvious one .. that we all get asked, “what’s it like working with Chris Moyles?”
D: It’s very nice working with Chris Moyles is the honest answer and it’s a bit of clique thing to say but Chris is actually a very nice bloke as you know … Aled? He is isn’t he?
A: Yeah he is, he is.
D: And he’s quite shy in real life, but working with him he’s quite a good laugh and its nice to have genuine laugh at work.
A: You do actually have a genuine laugh at work don’t you?
D: You do and we do lots of laughing out loud which previously I just worked in Newsbeat, I mean it’s a nice office up here but there’s not much to laugh out loud at when you’ve got sort of stories of destruction and house fires.
A: I can see that
D: It’s good not to laugh at those stories
A: How long have you been at Newsbeat?
D: Erm, 97.. so it’ll be ..
A: That’s a lot of years
D: … 10 years. 97 years ?
A: [Laughs]
D: I’m 108
D: 97 I started, freelancing and I was made staff in 2000
A: Yes
D: 97 would be so .. 10 years next year
A: So what does freelancing mean? You could this, and you could other things?
D: I used to work at different radio stations. I use to work at Virgin Radio ..
A: Ahh, did you?
D: .. and Kiss Radio in Manchester is where I started.
A: Now I, we did a little a thing for your birthday ..
D: Yep
A: … where I had to research your life and find out things about you. And I was actually fascinated you actually did start up in Manchester.
D: Yes, I did. That’s right, I was in charge of the Newsdesk at Kiss Radio….
A: You started it didn’t you?
D: Yes, I sorta set it up. It sounds better than it was because it was actually me and another bloke called Mike who wasn’t backwards but wasn’t that good at the news. So I was kinda his boss.
A: Right.. I see
D: I was like 22 or something like that but that was good fun because we didn’t do much work really, we used to finish work at 10 o’clock in the morning because I did the breakfast show news reading. A bit like I’m doing now and we used to go out and get in everywhere free because Kiss was seen as really cool in Manchester ..
A: Yeah
D: … and we used to have free tickets to everything, it was brilliant. I wasn’t married with Kids. Which I love my wife and kids but then you can’t go to so many clubs. ..
A: Rather than now
D: Exactly
A: So you didn’t last very long there?
D: No, it was only a year or something …
A: What happened?
D: .. Without going into too much personal details, I met a girl and it all went horribly wrong, we both moved to London
A: Oh really … Okay I thought you might of had another job?
D: No …
A: Oh right?
D: We both moved to London and she turned out to be a certain word could put in …
A: Right.
D: … but for libel reasons I won’t
A: Your wife left that bit out when I was getting the research from her?
D: Yes that’s right!
A: Okay, so ..
D: It wasn’t my current wife is worth saying, it was a girlfriend at the time
A: Ah okay? And you moved to London
D: Hopes she’s very happy ..
A: And do you work with?
D: Err, who do I work with? Where?
A: As in you moved to London …
D: Yes ..
A: You had a little time off and then got a job
D: Yes and then I did freelancing again for IRN, which is a radio version of ITN and ITV
A: Oh, wow.
D: Did a bit of that, and then did some Virgin Radio and then came here …
A: This is the best
D: To Radio 1
A: Ha ha
D: Radio 1, by far the best, a million miles is the best
A: You’d have to say that
D: But it is! Genuinely
A: So ..
D: You know that, that other places are rubbish compared to here
A: Well I’ve worked in a few places with a view of getting to here …
D: Hmm, exactly
A: … So I suppose there is quite few other people that do the same.
D: This is nice chat isn’t it?
A: Do you go online much?
D: Erm, no.
A: Considering you send us the blog to type up ..
D: Yes, I’m a bit like Dave, I have techno. Some people have technojoy – where they’re brilliant at everything and Dave & I both have techno fear where we’re not exactly sure what to do.
A: However, when it comes to editing on a certain editing programme …
D: I’m a whiz
A: … you’re very quick!
D: Absolutely, that’s fine. That doesn’t involved typing words that don’t mean anything which you have to do when posting a blog, without getting into the boring stuff.
A: What about news?
D: No no, News is using the English language, which is my first language. But in the blog stuff you have to type like “wtt…” and then start.. I don’t understand it. It’s like a foreign language
A: So you send it to me
D: (Dom goes on about another language)
A: Tell us about the family?
D: There very .. Well actually, they are okay but they both, my little boy and girl have both had chicken pox recently.
A: Oh really?
D: Yes, so that’s very bad news
A: Have you had chicken pox?
D: I’ve had chicken pox, yes .. When I was about 7
A: So you’re okay then.
D: When I had hair it brilliant because you could pull the spots through the hair.
A: Arrrgh.
D: I really liked doing, that was the highlight
A: Is that what the kids are going through?
D: Chicken pox, yes. They are very poorly with it actually.
A: Well from the Forum best wishes to your children from all of us
D: Thank you very much
A: And would you mind coming on the forum, maybe logging on occasionally?
D: Could I phone you with what I want to say?
A: You could and I could type for you if you want.
D: That would be good because I don’t understand all the letters
A: Dominic Byrne, thank you very much
D: Thank you very much Aled Jones
