Ryan Giggs could NOT have chosen to play for England. He was born in Wales to Welsh parents and 4 Welsh grandparents. He did captain England school boys but thats because he went to school in England.

bit of an urban myth

I was mildly interested in this so I looked it up:

http://www.englandfootballonline.com/Te ... biliy.html

So to be able to play for England, Giggs would apparently have to be a naturalised citizen of England. But it doesn't matter on what grounds England have deemed him a citizen.

sorry guys, you're mistaken. born in Wales, Welsh parents and grandparents only eligable to play for Wales

2nd paragraph

http://www.answers.com/topic/ryan-giggs
2nd paragraph of international section

I wish he had been English, but not so. never mind his Man Utd replacement, Keiran Richardson will be the answer to the England left side in years to come. you heard it here first

Wayne Rooney was born in Liverpool. I don't know about his parents but whether he is 2nd, 3rd or 10th generation Irish, he's English. Lampard and Gerard are French names but they can't play for Les Bleus.

So if you were President of FIFA, you could only play for a country if your surname originated from that area?

that makes little or no sense, my rooney comment and my comment about giggs were unrelated.

That story was the one that did the rounds when Giggs was first picked for Wales - but although he never commented on the situation between his parents, he has always said that in terms of his playing for Wales, this story is false - because he was never eligible for England. At least, thats wha I have heard him say. But it was a long time ago.

Adam M is correct although had he lived here for god knows how long he could have become eligible a la Cudicini and Di Canio.

you're wrong xavi. you're just regurgitating the urban myth. His dad wasn't English. His dads dad was mixed race Welsh/west indies I think. all other three grandparents were welsh and both parents and himself were born in Wales.

and easy on the exclamation marks dude!!!

yep

"There was much comment during the 1990s in England that Ryan Giggs should have played for England; however, Giggs was born in Wales to Welsh parents and had no eligibility or desire to play for England. He represented England's schoolboy team because he went to school in England."

I heard that his Dad ran the first 4 minute mile, and his mum invented asprin, and that his Nan won the 1st world war with her cooking, and he went to school at Hogwarts. I also heard that it's all rather irrelevant as he's past it now anyway, and England wouldn't want him even if they could forge his passport,

The only solution is to combine all the teams and have a Great British Football Team with players from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, we put ourselves at a disadvantage by playing as seperate countries when we are not, seperate that is, and then we could lookforward to all the Scots getting really narked when commentators refer to the UK side as England !!! Excellent sport.

Why would the Scots get narked? There wouldn't be any of them in the team, after all.....!

I think I made a perfectly valid and demonstrably accurate point. Mafro thinks so too, he just doesn't like it, which is fair enough.
