Really? Never knew that, and it would be a much better explanation of "pithy". Although I'm not sure how a pith helmet would prevent the brain being punctured by the spinal column in any circumstances where that would be a possibility. But I get the gist,and I like it.

If you get hit on the head very hard it can happen. Helmet absorbs and deflects the blow.
