However, Sage Instant Accounts (which, by the way, brand themselves as "accounting made easy for small businesses") wont let me do such things.

Unless I can prove where it comes from, it slaps me in the face and calls me a liar.

Well that's a problem with the software not you.
However frustrating it is, the 8th Century monks have developed a system which is meant to beat you.

I remember when I was training I spent two weeks trying to balance a bakers Bank Account, for the life of me I couldn't work out why it would not balance, in the end i asked for the original statements, only to find that all the monthly bank charges he had typexed out as he didn't agree with them ! Cost the arse about an extra £400 on his fees for that !
