Aled wrote:So more "Old stuff" for a station who's remit is to play New Music, and more "new and unsigned bands", oh and a few oldies per hour when Chris only plays 4 or 5 songs. I think you're seeing our problem. We're never going to please everyone. Radio 1's remit - is 15 - 24year olds, Radio 2 is 25- 45 year olds. How does playing David Bowie or more songs from the 80s (remember our remit some of our listeners being born in 1992) work?

I'm perfectly happy for the "old stuff" to be in Vernon Kay's "lie-in"... otherwise I would move to Radio 2. It's great to be able to hear new and upcoming talent ... excellent stuff.

On the whole the playlist is fine I think, and as far as the Chris Moyles show is concerned, I don't listen for the music anyway I listen to hear Chris and the team do a show. But across Radio 1 daytime shows as a whole there is (I think) a tendancy to play certain songs which are apparently seen as "hot" over and over and over until by the time they are available to actually download or buy we are so bored with them that they are the absolute LAST thing we want to see in the chart. I just think that songs are played far to much in advance of their release dates. Keep it fresher.

I'm not sure if they're necessarily "seen as Hot", or whether theyre highly promoted...
I remember some time ago Chris saying something to the effect that he didn't want to play the 'new' Eminem track beacuse it was crap, but he had too so as not to upset the promoters and the whole eminem industry.
I'm not sure how much say commercial bodies and promoters have on these issues, especially with the BBC but I hope that it's not much or even zero!
I don't mind tracks being played before their release date as long as it doesn't become repititive, and here lies another problem, D.J's have Egos, Radio 1 D.Js have big egos - if they didn't they wouldn't be on one of the worlds greatest radio stations - As far as I'm concerned its completely natural. So if a brilliant track gets played by say Chris Moyles, then I'm sure all the other D.J's will want to play it, (I bet their have been some arguments over whether they could play some tracks or not, hey Aled?) I'm sure thats when it can sometimes become repetitive.
I agree that the playlist is usually good (even superb sometimes), but this kind of industry needs constant tweaking to keep it fresh, and Aled and his fellow producers do a good job of it, but it doesn't hurt to debate the issue does it?

Something I have wondered about:

How long does the average listener actually tune in for at any one time? In my job, I can end up having the radio on all day. Because of this, I hear the songs that are on high rotation several times. To be honest, its never really bugged me, i tend to only have one ear listening.

I would imagine that the reason for this is coz that most folk maybe only tune in for a short time and would be less likely to hear the same songs over and over again.

One ear, Foots... what do you do with the other ?

I'm tuned in, I have worked out, for around 65 hours a week.

Ok, bit late but, Wonder Years are good. Very good. Lie in with vernon Kay is also very good. But so is new music. I love the Fratellis and music like that, and Radio 1 play it - it seems Edith starts her show almost always with the new fratellis song - good one to come out of news on cos its upbeat.

BUT... is there not a way on the playout computer to choose which songs the DJ's want to play, BUT stop them if its been played in the last 3 or 4 hours, so its not repeated too much, or suggest that they havent played this in the last 12 hours or so, and it would like to be played. Brings the "Disk Jockey" back to how it is defined in the dictionary, gives the DJ more choice and you can also throw it open to Listeners (txt us what track you wanna hear next... etc) like colin Murray. You can keep the tracks within the 15-24 remit, and give the listeners more choice, especially with Edith and Jo, 15 tracks an hour roughly, you can throw in an oldie.

One thought that i do like is to use the pips and play a song at EXACTLY the hour, every hour - but make it a good one. because then listeners tune in for it, and you can advertise ahead over the end of it - keeps listeners for that extra 5 crucial minutes!

The problem is that Radio 1 SHOULD have a more varied mix of music from the ages, plenty of 22/23 year olds liek songs older than themselves.

I remember in the afternoons on bank holiday's when Moyles and co used to come in they used to play quite a few tunes from the archives and they had plenty of emails & texts praising this.

There's nothing wrong with playing new music but a few old songs mixed in pre 2000 would be nice.

The people in Mr Yudster's office reckon they heard "The Wee-Woo Song" three times yesterday - and they only switched the radio on at 3.30 in the afternoon. Not Radio 1 though.

There's been some brilliant 'new music' recently, a few highlights:

Ice Cube - You Can Do It
Usher - Yeah (No..)
Basement Jaxx - Do Your Thing, good song but reared it's head randomly across a few shows within a few days
The Game - Hate it or Love it (Hate it..)
Pink - Trouble (2003??)
Jay-Z - Numb

Numb/Encore?
There was a whole album of those kind of mashups of Linkin Park and Jay Z, but I think Numb/Encore was the best one.

Yeah that's the biscuit. Still from 2004 though. Jay Z - 99 Problems was played today which was even before Numb/Encore in 2004. Bonnie and Clyde played a few weeks back, that's from 2003.

Someone in the music department liking a bit of Jay Z recently?
