Best not tell Ben, he'd be awfully upset.

Let's go!

Erhm... ^^;; if you hate new people so much, shouldn't you guys just close the forum to new members... ?

I don't hate new people. In fact, I take offense to that. Have a look through the forum and I think you'll find that, out of the older members, I am one of the main supporters of the newer folk and generally pretty damn welcoming as long as they seem decent. However, there has been a significant influx of weak arsed pissy "lets all hug daffodils and say how amazing life is and look at cute photos of puppies and knit" recently and it bores me. If this was real life then I would just ignore them till they went away. But it's the internet so I can post cartoon pictures of me holding a shotgun (which is a long standing gag on the forum but you probably wont know that) and make ridiculous comments which, in turn, encourages others to post witty replies which, in turn, entertains me. In short... dry yer eyes.

FRED!

If I may add my two penn'orth, I'd say we don't hate newbies at all - we were all newbies once! But there is a particular dislike of people who join up just after the forum has been mentioned on air and immediately start nonsensical or dimwitted threads. My experience of other forums has been the same too - the best way is to join unobtrusively, lurk for a while, don't start "OH HAI I'M NEW THIS PLACE IS GRRREAT!!11!" threads, post sensibly and non-controversially in an established thread, work your way up to regular status. It's not that difficult.

Everything you said there is great except for the "post non controversially" bit. I agree with "post sensibly", but a bit of controversy isn't a bad thing as long as its presented and handled intelligently. I for one would hate a forum full of people who are too scared to argue.

Interweb forums are like pubs. If you've never been before, and you burst through the door march over to a table of people who've been regulars for years and start shouting the odds then chances are, they'll be less than enthusiastic towards you.

If you sit at the bar, get to know the landlord and chat to them as they come to the bar, let them know they've left their fags on the bar, or offer them a light when they're standing out the back having a fag. Maybe help them carry a couple of drinks over if they don't have a spare hand, that kind of thing, then sooner or later someone'll buy you a drink and tell you to pull up a stool.
