I thought the chat yesterday about sleeping arrangements for the Big Weekend, with the 'Gay Wing' and 'Hetero Alley', was very funny and obviously all tongue in cheek, but it seems that some people didn't find it amusing at all. Aled is getting quite a kicking for it on DigitalSpy. I've seen him post in the Radio forum there several times before, so it will be interesting to see if he responds to it.

I've just had a read of the digitalspy thread. Some very unfair criticisms of Aled I feel - "self important, look at me smug attitude" and "uses his sexuality as a substitute for an interesting personality" are especially harsh. Another poster has rightly pointed out that Aled is a producer not a presenter, and it's not really his job to have an on-air personality - someone from here perhaps?

It is very true that if Chris had made the comments about wanting more straight people sleeping near him then there would have been an uproar. Unfortunately I don't remember every detail of the conversation - I think I was in Starbucks at the time - and I can't listen again right now, but from what I do remember I'm pretty sure the conversation was mostly in jest. They're all good friends and Aled would hardly be seriously saying he didn't want them sleeping near him cos of his sexuality. I think I have heard him use the word 'breeders' but all gay people say that - I've been called it myself at work enoughtimes, and I'm half rice half chips. It's just a friendly jibe, it's not hurtful.

Interesting also that another poster cited the Sunshine Sheilas debate as an example of why they don't like Aled, then mentioned the lyrics of Radio 1 playlist songs, singling out the current Katy Perry track and quoting one particular line...it's almost an exact copy of my post in the Sheilas thread here!

I do like Aled a lot, but he does like his moment in the spotlight. As he presents his own R1 show, has done a TV show and many other public appearances that is pretty obvious.

By and large he knows his place on the show and sees his role as behind Chris, Dave and Dom in that order, but occasionally he does milk it a bit too much for a producer-even Chris often comments on Aled's ego and desire to be heard on air.

On the 'gay wing' stuff, Aled made a point of stating that he wasn't complaining about anything and he said that it was the rest of the team making the issue (all in jest) and that he just thought the arrangements were made because of sexuality.

I don't see how anyone who heard the link could have an issue with what was said. It was all in jest and Aled wasn't making an issue of it.

I thought it was all rather funny & was done in jest, I noted they did a similar conversation during the marathon show, Aled had a similar tone with something then & you could see on his face that he was mucking around.

Some people on some boards just take themselves way too seriously.

I did think the conversation was slightly odd as Aled could never feel that they were discriminating against him because of his sexuality as they just wouldn't do that as they've know each other so long and get on so well together. But its nothing that anyone should get worked up about

Don't think they were singling him out because he's gay. To me it seemed to be that once it was mentioned he had his own room booked that Chris picked up on it.

The "haters" of the show always seem to pick up on the slightest point and blow it out of proportion. What a bunch of tossers, if they dislike the show so much just bog off and listen to somethin else.

People are super-sensitive about anything relating to sexuality. When I ws first on here, I complained about the way Scott Mills pretends to be straight (it was part of one of the regular 'let's all complain about Mills' threads, I didn't start a thread just to say that!) Immediately I was set upon and told not to get offended on behalf of gay people. Obviously people hadn't realised I'm bi when they said that, but they were probably right, it's not worth getting upset over.

To be fair to them, the overwhelming majority of 'contributors' to the digital spy forums are absolute frigging morons.

And in my past experience very rarely listen to, or watch what they criticise.
