My mate who works for the Beeb interviewd some guy who used to be the stig. I can't remember who it was though. they're normally all ex formula 1 guys though. Hence the Stig going on the formula 1 lap times board.

I have it on pretty good authority (my brother knows someone who works on the show - a bit tenuous, but it's all I have) that although there has been more than one Stig through the ages, there is only ever one at any given time. And Damon Hill has never been one. Allegedly.

I know of two. Perry McCarthy who was the original Stig who was sacked for revealing his identity. (This is true as he actually told someone I know he was the Stig when they met him!), and Ben Collins who was mentioned in the report of Hammond's crash.

Wasn't it also in his autobiography? I think he was sacked because of that (rather than because of telling your mate.)

Yes it was, and I believe you're right having just read a bit more about him. Probably didn't make it clear that that was just an example proving it to be true, wasn't suggesting he was sacked because of that instance. They may not have ever found out, but if he told this person i know, who isn't a mate btw just someone my dad knows who may have been a complete stranger to him, then he may well have told other people as well.
